QS, a British company specializing in the analysis of higher education institutions around the world, has published a ranking of student cities in the world. Among U.S. cities, Boston was named the best city for students. But most importantly, Boston was the only U.S. city to make the TOP-10.
QS ranking was based on the following factors: quality of life, number of top universities, graduates' opinions, and the availability of education. To be included in the rankings a city should have a population of at least 250,000 people and have at least two universities.
The rankings are based on the following 6 categories of indicators:
- Level of quality and quantity of universities
- Desire of potential students to study in this city
- The cost of living and the cost of education
- The demand for students from this city for further employment
- The ethnic diversity in the city
- Alumni Rankings and recommendations

QS TOP-10 Student Cities in the World:
United States Ranking Factors:
There are 3 factors that contribute to the fairly low scores of U.S. cities:
- Almost all U.S. cities have lowered the rate of student willingness to study there
- Affordability of learning and living in U.S. cities remains low
- The ranking of U.S. universities has also declined in recent years, despite the fact that the U.S. is the world's TOP university center.
As for Boston, its high position in the rankings is explained by the following:
- The demand for students in Boston by employers is very high
- MIT and Harvard played an important role in Boston's ranking
- High ethnic and gender diversity among residents and students in Boston.
Ben Souter, director of research at QS, said: "The U.S. has a special attraction among prospective students around the world. In ranking the top universities in the world, U.S. universities will be at the top of the list, as well as the high demand for students in the U.S. However, some events in the past have taken a toll on the level of desirability among young people. I will have to work hard to get back on track."
