It's Never Too Late: The Secrets of Effective Learning for Adults

In adulthood, learning is quite difficult. It's not just about the lack of time, but also about priorities, lack of support from loved ones, and much more. But it's never too late to take courses or get a second higher education if you really want it!

Problems of adults

Adults have a harder time learning, not only because their brains work slower than children's. Sometimes it is difficult to perceive new information due to internal barriers: many people think that they are too old to go to school, plus some are simply not supported by loved ones. Yes, you are no longer a teenager who can stay awake until dawn, and then go to lectures at 8 am! But you are at a great age when you can choose how much time to devote to classes, what to study, and give yourself practical lessons if you want to.

In andragogy (the science that studies adult learning), human motivation is singled out as a separate item. Schoolchildren do not really understand why their parents sent them to a programming club, but an adult is clearly aware of what he wants to learn there and how he will apply this knowledge in practice.

How to get started

During any process, the main thing is to get started. Do everything carefully according to these steps:

  • Purpose. Think about what you would like to learn and in what timeframe. The SMART method will help you with this, where S is the goal itself, M is how you will assess the achievement of your goal, A is an action plan that will help you achieve the result, R is how the goal will change your life, T is the deadline for achieving the goal. When you write down all the points, you will have a plan that will help you succeed.
  • Make a schedule, on which days you want to study and how much time you will spend on classes. Do not forget about rest, otherwise you will quickly burn out! There are many methods by which you can make a plan for the day. One of these was developed by Ivy League - it offered to write down things according to priorities: from the most important and necessary to the insignificant. You can also divide the day into blocks if you have enough time, for example: from 10 to 12 - work, from 12 to 14 - study, from 14 to 16 - gym, etc.

  • Break down the goal into many small tasks. If you want to learn how to code, then it will be difficult to learn a programming language in a month and start writing code. Everything should be done gradually. Find a course, take a trial lesson, do your homework; It will be great if you can apply the knowledge in practice.
  • Workplace. Organize a cozy working atmosphere that will set you up for studying: choose a comfortable time for studying, turn on white noise or calm music, remove everything unnecessary from the table.
  • Ask your loved ones to support you. It is quite difficult to decide to do something from scratch, but the support of relatives makes this process more enjoyable. You need to explain when you will be busy and ask not to disturb you at this time. Perhaps your loved ones will take on some of the household chores and thereby help you unload the schedule a little. Or maybe you will inspire someone to take a course with you, it will be even more fun to learn!

Starting from scratch as an adult is scary, but not because something bad awaits you, but because of the opinion of others. Remember that you need to rely on yourself, your desires and goals, and not on what others will think!
