Flag of the UAE: history of unified flag

Flag of the UAE: history of unified flag

The flag of this flourishing Middle Eastern country contains all the colors inherent in pan-Arabism - symbolizing fertility green, neutral white, black and red identified with oil, going back to historical symbolism; it was created by nineteen-year-old Abdullah Magomed Al Maaini and approved in December as a state. In 2008 it was slightly changed.

It is actively used by merchant ships, which also use red colors with a national flag in the upper left corner, and the Emirates airline uses the national flag to indicate its livery. It is used by all 7 emirates included in the state on a par with their own.

Flag of each emirate

The UAE states once belonged to one of the two confederations of tribes – Gafira or Hinawi, and both used the Hashemite red banner, symbolizing loyalty to the ruling dynasty and the Prophet. Some, however, had their own symbols - Kawasim, for example - the green-white-red banner was used on ships of the navy.

In 1820, six of the seven states were forced to sign a general maritime treaty with Great Britain: it secured the protectorate of Victoria and the promise of protection to these lands. The flags of all six lands included in the protectorate received a distinctive white stripe (Fujairah was left behind, since it was not considered an independent state by the colonial ministry, so it retained the red flag)

Sooner or later it all ends. So it happened with British rule - on November 6, 1975, the flag imposed by the British was removed. A new symbol took its place. Sharjah was followed a week later by um al-Qawein and Fujairah, Ajman, and by the end of the year a new cloth soared above all 7 states that are members of the confederation.

Along with the common flag, each emirate retains its own.

Abu Dhabi

Red with a white rectangle in the kryzh, was established in accordance with the General Naval Agreement of 1820. In practice, the rulers most often continued to use a monochromace red banner. All the talents of Percy Cox, the administrator of Her Majesty's colonies in the Middle East, were in vain - it was not possible to convince Zeid bin Khalifa to fulfill the imposed conditions.

It wasn't before 1950 that Abu Dhabi installed the white rectangle as the official version, just to stand out from its neighbors.

Ajman and Dubai

The flags of these countries are identical: a red canvas with a white stripe on the left edge.

Fujairah

Until 1953, this state used the red flag, and legally, because the rulers of Fujairah were not invited to sign an agreement with Britain on the protectorate.

From 1953 to 1961, the name of the state was also placed on the flag in Arabic language, which again disappeared and was not used from 1961 to 1975.

Ras Al Khaimah and Sharjah

This couple is also confusingly similar, since in both feudal possessions the ruling dynasty was the same. It is a red rectangle with a white border. The British identified it for the federation of the Kawashim tribes, but only two rulers managed to use it.

For military navigation (the treaty with the British retained the right of the Arabs to have a small military fleet) used the flag of Al-Qasimi - tricolor, where, along with the above colors, there was still green.

um Al Ouwain

Similar to Dubai and Ajman, but with a white star and crescent in the central part, which symbolizes devotion to the ideals of Islam.
