Parent councils from four Canadian schools have filed a lawsuit against several social networks: in their opinion, schoolchildren who spend a long time on the Internet have lower self-esteem and worse behavior. The plaintiffs estimate the damage caused to the educational system and their children at 4 billion Canadian dollars.
Due to the fact that students are constantly scrolling through their social media feeds, their academic performance is falling, and schools have to develop and invest in projects aimed at moral support of schoolchildren. According to the school board principal, children have become more aggressive over time, it is difficult to interest them in something, they cannot concentrate on one thing - and all this is because of social networks.
Parents filed a lawsuit against two large companies: ByteDance Ltd., which owns TikTok and Snapchat, and the second, Meta.
Many psychologists and employees of the educational system are concerned about the emotional health of students, because scientists have proven that social networks are addictive, and the content contained in them can cause depression and anxiety. Due to the constant scrolling of the feed, sleep deteriorates, and social isolation may occur.
Parents of students from many US states have also filed a lawsuit against the developers of popular sites: they believe that companies deliberately create products that are designed to cause addiction in people and lower their self-esteem.
According to research conducted in 2022, 95% of schoolchildren in the United States are on social networks. 54% of them answered that they do not want to spend less time on the Internet, because it is "very difficult" for them.
Speaking of social networks, many emphasize their negative aspects, forgetting that they help socialize, they are used to receive and share information. The main thing is to limit the time for scrolling the feed, on your own or from the perspective of a reasonable parent.
