WHAT IS INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS?
International relations is the study of relations between states, international organizations, transnational corporations and other subnational bodies. It is closely related to many other disciplines such as philosophy, law, economics, political science, history, sociology, geography and psychology.
It is important to note that, like other liberal arts qualifications, an MO degree will not provide a direct pathway to a specific profession, such as an accounting or engineering degree. Instead, it will provide you with a diverse knowledge base so you can thrive in multiple career areas.
MO provides a deep understanding of the key issues of the modern world: international security, foreign interventionism, organized crime, environmental sustainability, global finance, nuclear sustainability, globalization, diplomatic relations, sovereignty and nationalism, and many others.
In addition to working in foreign affairs or other government work, an MO degree can be used to enter the world of journalism, business, NGOs, social research, economics, and even advertising.
This versatile degree, coupled with the mastery of the world languages that are required in many universities, will enable students to find very exciting jobs.
Most ML courses also require students to study abroad as part of their degree, and they all add important soft skills that accelerate career growth in the long term.
WHERE AND WHO CAN WORK?
Diplomatic service (diplomacy)
It is undoubtedly the most famous career in international relations. As a diplomat, you are primarily tasked with representing and defending your country's political and commercial interests abroad, as well as offering consular services.
Other government agencies
The largest employers in the United States are the Department of Defense (military and civilian) and intelligence agencies, especially the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the National Security Agency (NSA).
Individuals with advanced, analysis-oriented degrees are well placed with these agencies. Graduates' skills in exotic languages, ML training, and majors in political science, mathematics, economics, engineering, and computer science are in high demand.
Political scientist
As a political analyst, a media company may hire an IO graduate to analyze government and other political structures, or at a research institute to develop opinion polls, disseminate election results, public documents, and so on.
Lobbyist
Also called advocacy or simply persuasion, lobbying is an attempt to influence the actions or decisions of legislators or regulators.
They can be hired by corporations, associations, non-profit organizations, etc., to persuade government actors to make decisions or pass laws that benefit the groups they represent.
Non-profit communications specialist
An ML degree can lead you to various careers in the non-profit world, most notably in communications.
