Attention tourists: Bali authorities have adopted new laws for visitors

In Indonesia's Bali province, Governor Wayan Koster signed a directive introducing a new set of rules of conduct for foreign visitors. These guidelines and restrictions came into force at the end of May and apply to the entire province, including popular resorts that attract tourisits.

Earlier, the authorities of the resort island have already discussed the need for foreigners to respect the cultural heritage of the region. For example, in Bali, tourists took inappropriate photographs at sacred sites, for which they were issued large fines and expelled from the country. More press attention was attracted by the case when one video blogger visited the holy volcano Agung in inappropriate clothing. As cases of inappropriate and uncultured behavior on the part of tourists became more frequent, the authorities had to take action.

What are the restrictions?

On May 31, 2023, the following bans came into force for tourists staying on the island of Bali:

  • Visiting sacred cultural monuments is allowed only in national Balinese costumes and exclusively for spiritual purposes. Public speaking and live broadcasts are prohibited;
  • it is forbidden to climb trees;
  • Any actions that may be considered as an insult to temples and other sacred places, including inappropriate photographs, are strictly prohibited;
  • it is necessary to maintain cleanliness, not to throw garbage in public places and to protect natural water bodies: seas, rivers, lakes and springs;
  • the use of single-use plastic products, including bags and straws, should be reduced to the maximum;
  • It is necessary to exercise etiquette and be polite to government officials, locals and other travelers. The same applies to social media posts;
  • It is forbidden to engage in labor activity or business without appropriate permits from local authorities. This rule also includes entrepreneurial activity;
  • And, logically, you can't sell prohibited items, including drugs, weapons, and so on.

What recommendations did the authorities give?

In addition to the restrictions, the provincial leader also presented a series of recommendations that basically coincide with the principles listed in the list of prohibitions, with an emphasis on respect for the environment. One important recommendation is to use the local currency – the rupee – for payment.

Earlier, the authorities imposed a restriction on the use of cryptocurrency in transactions in Bali.

Tourists are reminded to exchange money only in safe places marked with the Bank Indonesia logo and QR code.

It is recommended to make sure that the guide has a license to guarantee his knowledge of local traditions and beliefs and thus avoid accidental violations of the rules, which may not be obvious to foreigners.

One of the additional recommendations is to follow the rules of the road on the island. Foreigners are advised to familiarize themselves with local rules and follow speed limits, be especially attentive to motorcyclists and pedestrians.

Tourists are invited to get acquainted with the culture and customs of the local population. It is recommended to learn a few simple phrases in Balinese, such as "thank you", "hello" and "please", which will help establish a friendly atmosphere with the locals.

It is important to remember to take care of nature and the environment. Travelers are advised to use environmentally friendly hygiene products and cosmetics, do not leave garbage on beaches and other public places. Participation in local programs for the conservation and restoration of ecosystems is appreciated by local residents - feel free to ask for helpers.

Particular attention is paid to safety when swimming. Tourists are advised to follow the instructions of lifeguards on the beaches and avoid swimming in dangerous places, such as places with strong currents or underwater rocks.

The Indonesian authorities recommend that you always have copies of important documents with you, for example, passports and visas, contact details of the embassy or consulate of your country in case of situations requiring urgent assistance.

What happens if you violate the new bans?

The governor did not specifically say anything about the consequences of violations of the established rules, but stressed that violators will be subjected to strict measures in accordance with the current legislation of Indonesia. Past cases of tourists being deported suggest that this warning is taken seriously.
