We regularly hear the opinion that higher education in the modern world is not necessary to become successful, this is talked about on social networks, as an example, they cite famous personalities like Princess Diana or Mark Zuckerberg. But not everyone believes this point of view: some are sure that success without HSE is either an exception to the rule or a script from the movies. Who is right?
Talents without a degree, but with knowledge
- Henry Ford, despite his lack of higher education, gained extensive experience as a mechanical engineer: this allowed him to delve into the essence of the automotive industry and create his own company.
- Ingvar Kamprad, the creator of Ikea, received an education that met the standards of the time. His youth was during the war years, when the priority was to ensure the well-being and safety of his family, rather than studying at the university.
- Princess Diana, being a representative of the aristocracy, married the prince early, and Zuckerberg, although he did not graduate from Harvard, proved his abilities by entering one of the most prestigious universities in the world.
- Larry Ellison, a former Oracle executive, excelled academically, but was unable to complete his studies due to the death of his mother. He went through a difficult period that prevented him from continuing his education, but he managed to acquire the necessary knowledge and establish valuable contacts at the university.
Why is education necessary?
Of course, if a person has a sharp mind or genius abilities, they will succeed on their own by creating something unique. However, the reality is that most people lack a sufficient level of intelligence, self-discipline, motivation, and a clear understanding of their goals. Their abilities won't be enough to build a successful career from scratch, and that's where HSE can help.
There are professions where a diploma is necessary: for example, no one wants to go to a doctor without the appropriate education or fly on an airplane designed by an amateur. You have to be realistic: people like Cameron and Tarantino are geniuses who were able to carve out their niches at the right time. However, most of us are not geniuses, and it is more difficult to find a vacant niche every year.
In addition, do not forget about those who, for various reasons (illness, maternity leave), did not work for a long time. What prospects await them after returning to the profession? People with a diploma at least have a certain circle of acquaintances and a chance to get a decent job, but people without an HSE have to limit themselves to low-paid and unskilled jobs.
While the stories of outstanding personalities who have made it to success without a college degree are inspiring, they remain exceptions to the rule. For most people, higher education isn't just important—it plays a key role in their professional and personal development. Provided, of course, that you received it consciously, deliberately and in the desired specialty.
