Unusual city in Saudi Arabia with no roads and no cars

Unusual city in Saudi Arabia with no roads and no cars

Recently it became known that Saudi Arabia is planning to build a city on its territory, which is a small module spaced over 160 km. We would call it neighborhoods, but without cars.

Such projects, due to the growing interest in saving the environment, cause great information support. However, it is difficult to predict how much an idea is capable of becoming a reality.

At the same time, one should not forget that many such dubious and ambiguous plans are being implemented now. The most important thing is the relevance and support that already exists: the ideologists of the unusual city expressed their readiness to invest $ 500 billion in the project. The planned name is The Line .

City for people

As far as we know, the initiative to create The Line belongs to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is concerned about the current environmental situation. He would like to create a city that is truly dedicated to people. At the same time, it is not completely clear how everything should look like in practice. In addition, there will be no cars, and renewable energy sources are also planned.

One of the advantages of this city is that the journey through the entire city (between the outer quarters) will take approximately 20 minutes. Land roads, as we already know, will be completely absent.

The location of The Line is of interest: it is planned to be built on the coast along the coast of the Red Sea. There will be a paradise for tourists: beaches, cozy islands. Further, there is a desert, mountains and a valley without vegetation - through it they plan to create a passage to the main part of Saudi Arabia.

The authors of the projects consider their main task to be the creation of the most environmentally friendly place for living and leisure. Under the ground, according to the plan, not only the metro will be hidden, but the entire technical infrastructure (communications, sewerage - everything that could negatively affect the purity of the air).

If you believe the plans, literally in a 5-minute walk, residents of a certain quarter will have access to everything they need: a shopping and entertainment center, a gym, a tourist area, a business center, since The Line is also conceived as a city of business and technology that can increase the GDP of Saudi Arabia while reducing the state's dependence on oil exports.

This goal sounds somewhat fantastic, but this desire is understandable.

High-speed metro as the only mode of transport

The city will not have the roads we are accustomed to and no ground communication in general: these will be neighborhoods inhabited by groups of people and interconnected by an underground transport network. They plan to turn to the well-known project hyperloop, which is a vacuum high-speed metro, which is considered a technological breakthrough, although the idea arose at the beginning of the 20th century.

Some people think that the idea belongs to Elon Musk, but this is not the case. Several different companies are experimenting with this project. There is no information yet about who will be invited to build a hyperloop in the new city. However, this is not so important. It is more important to understand how such public transport will look and function (to which there is no alternative) - an underground pipe, which assumes movement only between specific points.

The idea, of course, is interesting and promising, but what will come of it is still difficult to understand. The planned start time for construction is the first quarter of 2021, that is, now or very soon.
