How abandoned factories in Russia get a new life: design projects

How abandoned factories in Russia get a new life: design projects

Many large enterprises, which once provided dozens and hundreds of jobs, ceased to exist, and the buildings of former plants and factories fell into desolation. The lucky ones from among them were converted into modern offices, where office employees go to work in five days, others wear the proud title of shopping malls (shopping and entertainment centers), and most remained ownerless and living out their lives ruins.

And so it would have continued, had hipsters not intervened, who at all costs needed creative places and spaces. Of course, this is ironic. And the development of the territories of former factories, and their transformation into modern centers of attraction for young people, hotels or museums is a good thing. Consider the most striking reincarnations in our country.

"Art-square", Ufa

"The center of Ufa, which never was" - the so-called project creators. The reason for this is the peeled facades of old buildings without proper care, old warehouses and garages, which spoiled the central part of Ufa. The owner of the "Art Square" for several years bought buildings to give the city a modern public area. In one of the buildings there used to be a tea packing factory, a shoe factory, a printing house. Today, this place is a fashionable cultural center, offering visitors walking areas, cafes and restaurants, coworking spaces, lectures and showrooms. Locals love "Art Square" and recommend a place to visit to all guests.

MAKARONKA, Rostov-on-Don

The dilapidated building of the former pasta factory is experiencing a rebirth in the form of a modern art space, combining under one roof an experimental theater and exhibition halls with artists' workshops. In addition to performances by young directors and exhibitions of contemporary artists, MAKARONKA conducts arthouse film screenings. The concentration of extraordinary ideas and creativity per square meter is off the scale!

Design Factory "Flacon", Moscow

The phrase design factory is confusing about the purpose of the place. On the territory of the former crystal factory is a large public and cultural center. Offices, restaurants, concert venues and a car cinema await visitors every day all year round.

Sevkabel Port, St. Petersburg

Beloved by St. Petersburg "Sevkabel Port" appeared on the map of the city relatively recently. Few people came for a walk in this remote part of Vasilievsky Island before.

The plant "Sevkabel" was founded at the end of the XIX century - this is the first cable plant in Russia. Interestingly, the founder of the company was the owner of the German concern "Siemens and Halske" Karl Heinrich Siemens (on the Russian passport Karl Fedorovich). With the help of products manufactured by the plant, St. Petersburg received street electric lighting and telegraph communication with Moscow. The Sevkabel enterprise has not disappeared anywhere and is still working, but in 2017, as a result of production optimization and as part of the gray belt renovation project in St. Petersburg, the plant transferred part of the territory to public space. Since then, life in Sevkabel Port has been in full swing: a concert venue, a winter skating rink, modern shops, restaurants and a food court attract young people from all over the city to walk and meet the sunset on the shores of the Gulf of Finland.

Hampton Hotel, Volgograd

Otherwise, the rethinking of the space of the former plant was approached in Volgograd. The management building of the plant was reorganized into a luxury hotel. Dilapidated and battered Soviet building with sagging soil turned into a first-class hotel.

Water Museum, St. Petersburg

The former water tower of St. Petersburg, built in the XIX century, turned into a museum "Universe of Water". During the tour, visitors are immersed in a real reservoir that stores knowledge about the water, not the water itself. Three expositions will tell the story of the development of water supply and sanitation from ancient times to the present, taking into account the peculiarities of St. Petersburg.
