When it comes to the world's best universities, most people still think of the US and the UK. The new QS World University Rankings 2027 confirms it: the leading positions are still held by these countries. But if you look at the results more closely, it becomes clear that the main news of this year has nothing to do with the traditional leaders! More and more universities from Asia and the Middle East are confidently rising and beginning to compete with established educational giants.
The QS World University Rankings 2027 included 1,504 educational institutions from 106 countries worldwide. For 15 years, the top spot has been held by Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It is followed by Imperial College London and Stanford University, which share second place. The top five also include University of Oxford and Harvard University.
Among universities outside the English-speaking world, ETH Zurich and National University of Singapore stand out particularly, maintaining their positions among the world's leaders. In the second ten of the global ranking, a notably high concentration of universities from China, Hong Kong, and Singapore is evident:
- Peking University,
- Tsinghua University,
- The University of Hong Kong,
- The Chinese University of Hong Kong,
- Nanyang Technological University.
The pace of growth of the Chinese education system is particularly impressive: China became the country with the largest number of new institutions entering the list and showed one of the best results in terms of the overall strengthening of its universities' positions.
India is also reinforcing its position in parallel: over the past 10 years, the number of local educational institutions in the ranking has grown from 14 to 52, and 18 of the country's universities have achieved their best-ever results.
Another trend that is hard to overlook is the rapid rise of Middle Eastern universities.
Prospective students today have far more quality study options than they did 10 years ago!
QS is considered one of the most authoritative university rankings in the world. When compiling the list, not only the academic results of universities are assessed, but also factors that directly affect prospective students:
- Research quality,
- Reputation among employers,
- Graduate career prospects,
- International connections,
- Quality of the educational environment,
- Sustainable development of universities.
Therefore, the ranking helps to identify not merely popular universities, but those that genuinely exert a significant influence on global education.
