Portuguese academic institutions have carefully preserved the long-standing traditions of higher education, while simultaneously integrating cutting-edge technologies and methods. Portugal is home to one of the oldest universities in Europe, the University of Coimbra, a UNESCO World Heritage site that historically attracted ambitious young people from across the continent.

Today, Portuguese universities maintain their prestigious reputation through participation in European Commission research projects, pioneering research initiatives, and a large influx of international exchange students. These students are drawn to the country's welcoming environment, excellent education, and affordable costs.

Universities in Portugal. Full guide for international students

The higher education system in Portugal is divided into two main types:

  • Universities: These institutions are dedicated to research, training academics, and granting academic degrees. This category includes specialized schools focused on law, medicine, and pharmacy.
  • Polytechnics: Emphasizing the training of technical experts, these institutions can award bachelor's and master's degrees. Polytechnics may be associated with universities, but not vice versa. Their education is practically oriented, concentrating on technical fields and solving real-world challenges.

Both universities and polytechnics can be funded by either the government or private organizations, like foundations.

What firstly should be considered when choosing a university?

It depends on the student - everyone determines the most important criteria for himself. I would advise you to take several rankings and compare them with each other, plus take into account the cost of the course, the location of the university and its scale, the percentage of graduates' employment. See where graduates continue their studies or where they go to work.

Stages of Studying at the Best Universities in Portugal

The higher education structure in Portugal encompasses three main levels:

  • Licentiate (Undergraduate): Comparable to a bachelor's degree in other European countries, this level typically spans 3 to 4 years. The final year often involves specialization. Entry requirements include a high school diploma or its equivalent, school qualification exam results, and in certain institutions, like the University of Coimbra, Portuguese national exams. Proficiency in Portuguese (DIPLE) or English (IELTS/TOEFL) is also mandatory.
  • Master (Graduate/Postgraduate): Master's programs generally last 1-2 years. Specialized programs, such as those in law and medicine, termed "Mestrado Integrado," can extend up to 6 years. Concluding the program typically requires a research project or a dissertation.
  • Postgraduate: This doctoral phase caps the academic journey. Universities or their associated institutes offer these internationally recognized programs in line with the Bologna Process. Spanning 3-4 years, the curriculum is split between lectures, seminars, and intensive research or artistic projects. A minimum average diploma score of 16 is often required for admission.

Universities in Portugal. Cost and fees for international students

Portugal, famous for its lively culture, historic towns, and stunning coastlines, also offers a robust higher education framework featuring universities that have earned significant international recognition. Many of these institutions, with roots stretching back hundreds of years, blend tradition and contemporary practices, providing a distinctive educational atmosphere for students worldwide.

For international students, the expenses associated with attending Portuguese universities are generally economical when contrasted with numerous other Western European countries. Typically, annual tuition for undergraduate programs ranges between €1,000 and €7,000, whereas master's and doctoral degrees may range from €1,500 to €8,000. However, the actual costs may differ based on the program, institution, and its public or private status. Certain specialized fields, especially medicine and engineering, can have higher tuition rates.

While the tuition fees are competitive, international students should also budget for living expenses, which can vary between €500 and €1,000 monthly, influenced by the city and personal lifestyle. Major urban locations like Lisbon and Porto tend to be pricier. Additionally, many universities provide scholarships, grants, and financial assistance that can help ease the financial burden for qualified applicants. Thoroughly researching specific institutions, understanding all costs involved, and investigating financial aid options are vital for any foreign student pursuing higher education in Portugal.
