World university rankings explained: QS, THE and ARWU
When comparing universities across countries, three global ranking systems set the standard — QS, Times Higher Education (THE) and the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). Each uses its own methodology and covers a different slice of higher education, so understanding what they measure helps in reading the results correctly.
QS World University Rankings. The current edition is the QS World University Rankings 2026. QS is not a single table but a family of rankings: the overall world ranking, rankings by subject, rankings by region, a sustainability ranking, and specialized lists such as Best Student Cities, MBA and Business Masters. This makes QS useful both for broad comparison and for narrowing down a specific field or location.
Times Higher Education (THE). THE has provided performance data on universities since 2004. Its flagship THE World University Rankings 2026 covers more than 2,000 research-intensive institutions from 115 countries and territories, while the World University Rankings by Subject 2026 spans 11 academic disciplines. THE also runs thematic tables: the Impact Rankings 2025 measure 2,526 universities against the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, the Interdisciplinary Science Rankings 2026 cover more than 900 universities from 94 countries and territories, and regional editions include the Latin America University Rankings 2026 with 223 institutions from 16 countries and the Arab University Rankings 2026 with 268 institutions from 18 countries or territories.
ARWU (ShanghaiRanking). ARWU is recognized as the precursor of global university rankings and publishes the world's top 1,000 research universities each year, based on a transparent methodology and objective third-party data. Its subject ranking, the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS), covers 57 subjects across five areas — Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences and Social Sciences.
Reading all three together gives a balanced picture: QS and THE weigh reputation and teaching alongside research, while ARWU leans on research and academic output. A university that performs strongly across several of these systems is a reliable signal of quality.
Cost of living for students by study destination
Tuition is only part of the budget — everyday living costs vary widely between study destinations. A useful benchmark is Numbeo's Cost of Living Index, which compares cities against New York (set at 100). The lower the number, the cheaper daily life tends to be for an international student.
| City | Cost of Living Index (New York = 100) | Relative level |
|---|---|---|
| London | 89.96 | Among the most expensive major destinations |
| Sydney | 80.93 | High |
| Berlin | 73.01 | Moderate, affordable for Western Europe |
| Prague | 59 | Relatively affordable European option |
| Tokyo | 55 | Moderate |
| Beijing | 38.32 | Markedly cheaper |
| Delhi | 21.89 | Lowest among major destinations |
These figures cover rent, food, transport and other regular expenses, so they give a realistic sense of how far a monthly budget stretches. For example, a meal at an inexpensive restaurant in Bordeaux costs about €20, which helps illustrate typical day-to-day food spending in Western Europe.
Asian destinations such as Beijing and Delhi sit far below the New York baseline, while London and Sydney sit close to it. Comparing living costs alongside tuition gives a much clearer picture of the total investment behind each program. The index is built from crowdsourced data — Numbeo holds more than 9.8 million prices across over 12,700 cities entered by over 880,000 contributors.
Global student mobility: how many study abroad and where
International education keeps growing year after year, and the numbers show just how many students cross borders for their studies. As of 2024, around seven million students were enrolled in higher education outside their home country. China and India remain the largest sources of this flow — 14% of those seven million students come from China, and another 19% come from India.
The United States stays at the center of this movement. According to the Open Doors 2025 report (published by the U.S. Department of State and the Institute of International Education), the country hosts 1,177,766 international students from around the world. On top of that, 66,033 students are enrolled in Intensive English Programs, and 116,540 international scholars are based in the US. Mobility runs in both directions as well — 298,180 U.S. students go abroad for academic credit.
Other destinations are catching up fast. South Korea reached its target of 300,000 international students in 2025, two years ahead of schedule, with nearly two-thirds of those students coming from either China or Vietnam. At the same time, not every segment is expanding everywhere — the volume of English language teaching weeks in the US fell by almost 8% in 2025, a reminder that demand shifts between countries and program types.
For families choosing where to study, these figures point to a wider set of strong options than ever before. Established hubs like the US continue to attract the largest numbers, while newer destinations build capacity and welcome more foreign students each year.
