Features of getting higher education in Austria for foreign students

First of all, it is necessary to consider the types of universities that offer higher education in Austria. There are four types of universities:

  • Universities of a research type (either broad-based, providing education in various scientific fields, or narrow-profile, which emphasize the study of any one or two scientific fields), as well as art universities offering higher education in the field of music, theater or fine arts.
  • Universities of applied profile, offering higher education in the humanities from the economic sphere to design and computer science. Such higher education institutions are especially popular among already working students, therefore they offer appropriate educational programs.
  • Pedagogical higher educational institutions teaching bachelors who subsequently become accredited highly qualified teachers working with children in primary and secondary classes, as well as with children with special needs. Typically, these educational programs last 3 years.
  • Private universities that accept foreign students are considered the most progressive and effective, since the vast majority of private higher education institutions usually invite the best teachers from all over Austria and abroad.

Documents to apply for higher education in Austria for foreign students

For higher education at the University of Austria, students must provide the following list of documents:

  • Certificate of complete secondary (special) education (for secondary school students) or a certificate-extract from the current university where you study;
  • For secondary school graduates, a special certificate is required. You should apply for higher education institutions offering specializations similar to the chosen specialty at the University of Austria.
  • For all categories of applicants: certificate of international exam for German proficiency. The requirements of the minimum level depend on each particular university (B2 is enough somewhere, and at least C1 is needed somewhere). However, there is the possibility of obtaining a higher education in Austria without command of German: either choose an educational program in English or attend German language courses before entering a university in Austria.
  • Finally, it is necessary to successfully pass the entrance tests, preparation for which is also offered by almost all higher education institutions in Austria for schoolchildren and students.

Your comment/review/question:
Hello, I did not find in the list of universities of the Vienna Veterinary University, it is not included in the list of your partners?
Hello. What can I do after the 11th grade of the Russian school at the Vienna Conservatory? Thank.
Good afternoon. I'm 19 years old, I live in Russia. I would like to know more about the possibility of studying in Austria as a linguist-translator. Please advise higher education institutions where this can be done. Will I have to take entrance examinations in this specialty? Is there a learning option in English (since I have a New Zealand certificate of English language teaching, with a confirmed B2 level)? Regards, Anastasia
Anastasia, good afternoon. Thank you for your inquiry. Unfortunately, in Austria in English we can offer mainly areas related to business and management. Regarding the directions of linguistics - it is usually taught in German. If these directions could interest you - please email us at general mail, and our specialist will definitely contact you.
