Paris Lodron University of Salzburg was founded in 1622 by Prince Archbishop Paris Lodron and re-established in 1962.

The University of Salzburg has buildings in different parts of the city. In addition to the main library, university library branches are located at UNIPARK, the Freisaal campus, the social sciences building, and the Toskanatrakt building of the Faculty of Law, Business and Economics. Tours of the main library are offered to new students in English and German.

The Freisaal campus has a botanical garden. The Faculty of Theology and SMBS business school are in Salzburg's old town. Law doctoral students study in historic buildings.

The university's digital services include Wi-Fi, software, and printing.

The ÖH student union contribution and any applicable tuition are due each semester. Installment payments are not allowed. Students can pay online or through a bank. Bank transfers may take up to 5 business days.

Doctoral studies at the Faculty of Natural and Life Sciences prepare students to conduct independent research and publish their findings in international scientific publications. The degree qualifies graduates for leadership positions at universities, advanced technical colleges, public institutions, and companies.

Graduates of the doctoral program in Catholic Theology can pursue careers in church institutions, universities, adult education, culture, human resources, libraries, publishing, and media. Other fields include politics, ethics consulting, healthcare, interreligious dialogue, and nonprofit organizations.

The Teacher Training doctoral program prepares students to conduct independent research in teaching and education and produce research publications of international standing.
