Understanding the Structure of Higher Education in France

The French higher education system can seem complicated. Nowadays, it's currently undergoing reforms aimed at optimizing its structure. Universities in France provide studying at three levels. After completing studies at each level, graduates obtain a diploma. Smaller universities often focus on first-tier studies, with second and third tiers offering specialized fields of study. Higher education in France is provided by a mix of universities, specialized higher education schools, and the elite Grandes Écoles.

Different Types of Educational Institutions in France

Universities provide comprehensive education, combining general humanities courses with specialized classes. As for higher schools, they make an emphasis on preparation of highly specialized professionals, among which are teachers, doctors, and IT specialists. Specialized institutions are designed to prepare specialists in niche professions, which include culinary arts, creative fields, and tourism. Upon completing studies,  graduates from private schools are demanded in the global labour market.

International Recognition of French Higher Education

Diplomas from French universities are highly valued in the global job market. Top fields of study include medicine, law, education, and journalism. The University of Paris, also known as the Sorbonne, is considered as one of the best universities in France and is the largest in the country. Currently, it is a conglomerate of 17 autonomous state universities and a key player in France university ranking.

What firstly should be considered when choosing a university?

It depends on the student - everyone determines the most important criteria for himself. I would advise you to take several rankings and compare them with each other, plus take into account the cost of the course, the location of the university and its scale, the percentage of graduates' employment. See where graduates continue their studies or where they go to work.

How to apply to Universities schools in France for foreign students

To enter a French university, a foreign student is required to pass several stages. Careful planning and attention to detail are important components in the application process. Firstly, a student is required to select universities and courses, complying with your interests, preferences and future goals. France is distinguished by diversity of educational institutions, ranging from traditional universities to specialized Grandes Écoles. Each institution is featured by its own application process and requirements. When a list of preferred institutions is formed, it is necessary to check the specific entry requirements for your chosen educational program, as there can be significant variations. Typically, confirmation of language knowledge in the French isrequired, by providing test results suchas the Test de connaissance du français (TCF) or the Diplôme d'études en langue française (DELF).

The primary platform for applying to French higher education is the Parcoursup portal designed for students who wish to enroll in the first year of undergraduate studies. However, some universities have their procedures and may not be part of this centralized system, particularly for postgraduate courses. In the case of applying via Parcoursup or directly to the university, submission of the following documents are required: academic transcripts, certificates, and sometimes letters of recommendation. A motivation letter in which you describe your academic goals, career prospects is required. Also it is necessary to list reasons why you want to pursue education in this particular institution.

If a foreign student is not a resident of the European Union, visa processing issues are very important for consideration. When the acceptance letter from the university is obtained, a student begins to apply for a visa by visiting  the French consulate or embassy in your home country. When applying for a visa, it is necessary to submit  confirmation of acceptance and  financial solvency. In some cases confirmation of accommodation in France is provided. It's recommended to apply in advance to avoid  any delays or complications that may arise.

When entering top universities in France, foreign students are frequently required to take an entrance exam or pass an interview. Usually applicants can take an exam remotely or at a testing center, which is located in  your home country. For example, if you're applying to a French business school, you might need to take the TAGE-MAGE, a standardized test measuring aptitude for business studies. Interviews may also be conducted virtually, especially if travel to France is not feasible for the applicant.

Universities in France. Cost and Fees for foreign students

The tuition fees in French universities vary widely due to such factors as the institution type, the educational program, and the student's nationality. Compared to the UK and the USA, studying at public universities in France is less expensive. As of last update in September, tuition for EU students attending public universities ranged from approximately €170 to €380 per year for undergraduate and master's programs, respectively. However, specialized courses like medicine or engineering may have additional costs.

For non-EU international students, the tuition fee is lower compared to Western countries. The cost of studying amounts to €2,770 per year in the case of an undergraduate program and €3,770 per year for a master's program at a public university. Diverse scholarships and financial aid options are available for foreign students, allowing them to compensate for tuition fees. Please check the specific university's fee structure as these figures can vary and may have changed after last update.

Private universities and Grandes Écoles are featured by higher tuition fees. Total amount varies from a few thousand euros to over €10,000 per year. The distinguishing feature of these institutions is a specialization in certain fields such as  business, engineering, or fine arts. Studying is conducted in small classrooms, providing students with different amenities. Some institutions offer more personalized education. If you choose prestigious business schools for studying,  the cost of education may exceed €15,000 per year. Private institutions provide scholarship opportunities, financial aid, and flexible payment plans, so consider these options before applying.

Also foreign students should consider extra expenses concerning educational materials,  and living in France. Location of the educational institution stipulates the amount of living costs. For example, studying in Paris is featured by a higher tuition fee. Students may also need to pay for administrative fees, student union fees, and possibly student health insurance. Foreign students will be pleased with the information that healthcare in France is distinguished by affordability.
