Indian universities continue to build their international reputation

Just a few years ago, Indian higher education was more often described as a system that was not the most advanced, but with enormous potential. Also the situation is changing: the new QS World University Rankings 2027 results show that Indian universities are not just developing — they are increasingly consolidating their positions on the global education map! The most interesting thing is that success is no longer limited to a few well-known institutions: over the past 10 years, the number of Indian universities in the QS rankings has grown from 14 to 52. This is the fastest growth among all G20 countries.

Today India occupies fifth position in the world by the number of universities represented in the ranking, behind only the USA, the UK, China, and Germany. This year, more than half of Indian universities improved their positions, and 18 universities achieved their best results ever. Traditionally, the highest positions among Indian universities are held by members of the IIT system. The best result in the country was shown by IIT Delhi, which rose to 118th place in the world — this, incidentally, matches the record previously set by IIT Bombay. Among India's leading universities are:

Among universities not specializing exclusively in engineering and technical fields, the highest-ranked was the University of Delhi.

If previously India's international recognition was built mainly around a few elite institutions, now a much broader range of universities is demonstrating strong results. Among universities that showed the most notable growth this year are:

According to QS, of the 18 universities that achieved record positions for themselves this year, 13 do not belong to the IIT system. Just 10 years ago there were only 7 non-IIT universities in the ranking, and now there are already 43. Furthermore, the universities in the ranking today represent 19 states and union territories of India, compared to 9 regions 10 years ago: this indicates that the development of higher education is happening across the entire country, not just in individual academic centers.
