US universities are massively cutting budgets due to the outflow of foreign students

The number of foreign applicants to the United States continues to decline, which is why the management of local universities and colleges is forced to reduce their own budgets. Several dozen universities have already reported this.

Over the past academic year, according to NAFSA experts, American higher education institutions lost 15% of potential and actual foreign students. Many major U.S. universities have reported declines in international admissions, ranging from 1% at the University of Illinois to 19% at New York University at Buffalo. The largest drop was recorded among master's programs, for example, in Urbana-Champaign - by 22%, and in Buffalo - by as much as 58%.

Since almost all foreign students occupy fee-paying places, the decrease in their number has led to significant financial losses. As a result, there is a tangible damage to both the economic situation of universities and the economy of the state as a whole. Some universities are increasingly talking about potential job cuts, and some institutions have already begun layoffs: for example, Johns Hopkins University has eliminated 2000+ jobs, Northwestern University has 425, and the University of Southern California has 630+.

Recall that such sharply negative changes in the educational sector of the United States of America occurred due to the update of the rules of the immigration service: they complicated the process of obtaining a visa and increased the risk of rejection of foreign citizens who applied to study in America.
