The American University of Colorado Denver (CU Denver) has received a letter of intent from India's University Grants Commission (UGC): it is required for the future branch in Hyderabad to be eligible to award degrees. The first intake of students is expected as early as 2027.
Among the first programs offered are courses in business, analytics, engineering, and computing technologies. The campus will be located close to the region's business and industrial center, so all courses will be as closely connected as possible to employers and will take labor market needs into account; students will have broad opportunities for internships and work placements. Interdisciplinary learning is planned starting from the 2nd year.
CU Denver's strategic partner in India will be the international education company Emeritus. The idea behind the partnership is to make the world's best educational practices more accessible to the Indian market and local students, and to make education in India more career-oriented and more practice-oriented.
The opening of CU Denver in India fits into the overall trend of top universities expanding into India:
- In 2026, permission to open its own branch was granted, for example, to Illinois Institute of Technology,
- Australia's University of New South Wales (UNSW),
- University of Southampton has been operating since 2025, and University of Western Australia (UWA) since 2026,
- The British University of Liverpool, University of Bristol, and University of York have already received permission to build.
The region's authorities are themselves aiming to attract foreign universities: for example, they are preparing sites for University of London and Northeastern University. So this is almost certainly not the last high-profile and promising opening we'll hear about in the next 5 years.
