GRE exam: useful information

The GRE exam (Graduate Record Examinations) is a standard test that assesses the analytical, verbal, mathematical abilities of a student. It is required to apply for many postgraduate study programs in the USA and the UK . GRE is held in electronic format in the most universities and educational centers - but students can register for Graduate Record Examinations exclusively on the ETS website. You can take the exam many times, provided that the last attempt was more than 60 days ago.

There are 2 types of GRE:

  • General revised test
  • Subject Test

GRE General Student Exam

GRE General Revised Test is conducted in English , assessing the level of general knowledge of the student in the following disciplines:

  • English language
  • maths
  • geometry
  • algebra.

This exam contains 3 parts, each of which is designed for an hour:

  • 2 essays (Analytical Writing)
  • 20 questions in mathematics (Quantitative Reasoning)
  • 20 tasks for testing verbal skills (Verbal Reasoning).

One of the features of the test is that one QR / VR task unit is not subject to assessment and does not affect the total score of exam results: it is designed to study students' independent work with non-standard tasks. It can be any part of the test except Analytical Writing

The GRE Subject Test is popular among students applying for a Ph.D. in university research. It consists of one part and is designed to assess knowledge in physics, chemistry, mathematics, cell, molecular biology, English literature, etc. - the student passes the necessary subject depending on future goals and professional direction.

Testing is carried out 1 time in 3 months exclusively in English, covering a wide area of necessary knowledge, and is intended for graduates of bachelor's programs in the corresponding direction.

GRE test for foreign students: assessment system

The popular GRE exam has a two-level grading system: point and ranking, while the number of points scored is calculated according to a certain principle, reflected in the table:

Analytical writing

QR and VR

The maximum number of points: 6.

The test evaluates a competently structured text structure, narrative logic, vocabulary, syntax, and the ability to work with arguments.

The maximum number of points: 170.

The applicant receives one point for each correctly completed task. A block that is only 50% complete is not subject to evaluation.

The ranking is based on the cumulative percentage result of last year’s tests by students since 2012. Each point is equal to a certain percentage, when calculating the ranking , the general data of students from all over the planet are taken. Based on the statistical information of universities, master's programs present loyal requirements - 160 points for 2 parts, while at least 4.0 for analytical, verbal, and mathematical. To apply for a Doctoral degree, you must have 163 and 4.5 points. Some leading universities, such as Yale, Cornell, etc., accept students with a higher mark - not lower than 168 and 5.0: this should be taken into account when choosing an educational institution.

GRE Exam : Cost

For applicants who wish to take the GRE exam, it must be borne in mind that the price depends on the type of test. The GRE General Revised Test will cost $ 195, and the GRE Subject Test will cost $ 150. There is also an item of additional costs:

  • $ 25 - for students who want to register late for the exam
  • $ 27 - for those wishing to receive an officially certified additional duplicate of the test.

Shelf life of the GRE certificate is 5 years - this is an excellent chance for motivated students to use the document repeatedly, having the opportunity to enroll in a doctoral program after graduation.
