Primary and secondary education for foreign students in Sweden

Compulsory secondary education in Sweden lasts 9 years (grundskola), the second stage is a gymnasium (gymnasieskola). For 3 years, students, who wish to continue their studies at the university, have been studying here. For all types of schools, such an academic program is common, so foreign stundets choose a school depending on preferences and financial opportunities. The academic year is divided into two half-years.

In the table you can find out about the types of schools, the stages of the educational process and the subjects studied in high school.

High quality education in Sweden for foreign students. How to choose a university?

In 2007, the country changed its usual methods to the Bologna system of education, which divides the educational process into two academic stages with intermediate protection of status work:

  • Bachelor's degree - 3 years of study, further - defense of the bachelor's thesis
  • Master's program - + 2 academic years with subsequent defense of the master's thesis
  • Doctoral studies - + 2-year studies, subsequent defense of the dissertation + 4 years of research work (the licensee receives a doctorate).

Quality higher education in Sweden can be obtained in:

  • college
  • university.

Colleges offer professional education without a doctorate; the university offers higher education in all areas of social and natural sciences, technology, economics and law. Doctoral degrees are obtained only at universities.

The most popular specialties that can be obtained at Swedish colleges and universities:

  • engineering, computer science
  • natural sciences
  • humanitarian sciences
  • agriculture
  • economics, business, law
  • medicine, theology.

Admission conditions at prestigious universities, colleges in Sweden

For students living in Sweden and the EU, university education is free (except for the additional costs that students themselves bear: living expenses, textbooks, etc.). Although if there are material difficulties, you can seek help from a special committee that issues loans and credits, and some amounts are issued free of charge.

Foreign students must pay for their studies themselves, but there is a good opportunity to apply to one of the charitable educational foundations in Sweden and receive a financial grant (scholarship, grant) for study.

The best Swedish universities, especially the most prestigious ones, are eager to accept foreign students: foreign students make up about 30% of the total. Most universities accept applicants without passing entrance tests or exams, with the exception of a few of the most prestigious. Due to the high quality of training and the level of graduates, the requirements for students are quite high.

As a rule, upon admission prestigious universities in Sweden require certificates for passing the language exams TOEFL (English), IELTS (English), TISUS (Swedish). Swedish courses can be completed in the northern state a few months before admission. Foreign applicants should be aware that they are admitted to universities with a 12-year education, so first you need to complete 1 course of a domestic university.

From foreign students it is also desirable to have:

  • motivation letter
  • letter of recommendation (letters).

In a motivation letter based on the model established by the university, the applicant justifies why he wants to study in Sweden, and recommendation letters, as a rule, are written by school teachers or supervisors.

Studying in the best public and private schools in Sweden: interesting facts

Students with poor academic performance at home will appreciate the grading system in Swedish schools. They will never receive “failure”, since such an assessment does not exist. Instead, a harmless “F” will be affixed. Such an encouraging subtlety will not allow the student to think that he is the worst. Using a literal assessment methodology at school, specialists from the Ministry of Education continue to think about a new one - they believe that any of the existing grading scales cannot adequately assess children's abilities.

The best university students receive a scholarship in the amount of about 160 € + excellent students can participate in a competition for a grant - state financial assistance to students of higher schools. Foreign students (like natives) can get higher education in 2 years - in this case, a Bachelor's degree is not awarded.

For schoolchildren from emigrant families special classes are formed according to the type of mixed ones, which can consist of schoolchildren of different ages. Interestingly, for each, an individual program is provided taking into account the initial level of education and abilities. Studying Swedish is the only one for all students of emigrant classes, because it is in this school that teaching takes place.
