Universidad Austral de Chile (UACh) is a private research institution. He began to function in 1954. The Australian University of Chile is located in the city of Valdivia.

The main campus of Universidad Austral de Chile (Isla Teja) occupies the entire north-west of Valdivia. The university publishes several scientific journals, three of which: Bosque, Archivos de Medicina Veterinaria and Estudios filológicos are part of the ISI bibliographic database. - Paleontology: Paleontological research in southern Chile involved several excavations at the Quaternary fossil site Pilacuco Baggio in Osorno, where remains of the Gomphotherium species were discovered.
- Virology: scientists from the medical and scientific faculty conducted a series of joint medical, viral and zoological studies on the transmission of hantavirus between rodents and humans. Hantavir was first discovered in Chile in 1995, but is believed to have been present for a long time. According to Dr. Luis Zarar, the most important discovery of UACh against antivirus was made in 2005, when Hanta antigens were found on the salivary glands of the dead. Researchers at the school working in the virology lab have contributed to reducing the initial mortality from the pulmonary hantavirus.
