Universidad Austral de Chile (UACh) is a private research institution. He began to function in 1954. The Australian University of Chile is located in the city of Valdivia.

The university publishes several scientific journals, three of which: Bosque, Archivos de Medicina Veterinaria and Estudios filológicos are part of the ISI bibliographic database. In the field of literature, communication science and linguistics, the university published the journal Documentos Lingüísticos y Literarios.

The school has its own library, a comfortable hostel for foreign students, a sports complex and playgrounds. All laboratories are equipped with modern material and technical base.

The main criterion for admission to the university is the entrance exam. According to its results, the selection of applicants takes place. Both local residents and foreigners can apply. More than 13,000 students are trained at the Australian University of Chile. The teaching staff includes about 600 teachers. The institution is famous for its research work. For example:

• Archeology: University scientists conducted excavations at Monte Verde, one of the earliest archaeological sites in North and South America.
• Dendrochronology: Scientists from the Dendrochronology Laboratory UAC have created the longest dendrochronology in the southern hemisphere, which is 5666 years old. Researchers have also recovered temperatures from the past 3,622 years.
• Language Mapudungun: UACh occupies one of the main positions in language studies Madudungun.
• Paleontology: Paleontological research in southern Chile involved several excavations at the Quaternary fossil site Pilacuco Baggio in Osorno, where remains of the Gomphotherium species were discovered.
• Virology: scientists from the medical and scientific faculty conducted a series of joint medical, viral and zoological studies on the transmission of hantavirus between rodents and humans. Hantavir was first discovered in Chile in 1995, but is believed to have been present for a long time. According to Dr. Luis Zarar, the most important discovery of UACh against antivirus was made in 2005, when Hanta antigens were found on the salivary glands of the dead. Researchers at the school working in the virology lab have contributed to reducing the initial mortality from the pulmonary hantavirus.

The institution has partnerships with many international centers and organizations. He is also a participant in the educational program for the exchange of students and teachers.
