There is only 1 city council-run kindergarten in York - St Paul's Kindergarten. Also in the city there are private kindergartens offering services for the maintenance and education of children in a variety of methods, including Montessori.

York City Council governs most of the city's primary and secondary schools. About 70 local schools are open here, 10 of them offer secondary education, ending with a GCSE diploma, four offer training up to 18 years old in A-level, International Baccalaureate programs.

York St John University was founded in 1841 as York Diocesan Training School. Today it is an urban public research university in North Yorkshire, England, with about 5,000 students.
York St John's University in 2026 will celebrate its 185th anniversary and 20 years of full university status.
