Description of National Center for Theoretical Sciences, Physics

  • Location: Taipei, Taiwan
  • Year of foundation: 1997
  • Language of instruction: Chinese, English
  • Type of education: mixed.

The National Center for Theoretical Sciences (NCTS) is a national research center whose goal is to develop advanced research, assistance in the field of international and interdisciplinary theoretical sciences.

NCTS was established as a center for theoretical physics and mathematics in 1997, after a while these two directions became independent, but tied to the institution. For the first 18 years, the institution was located on the campus of Tsinghua National University in Hsinchu, then was transferred to Tangbei.

NCTS scientists are working on several research topics:

  • High Energy Phenomenology, Strings, and Gravity
  • Condensed matter physics
  • Atomic, molecular, optical physics
  • Soft matter, biophysics, complex systems.

Accommodation, meals, prices

The institution does not provide on-campus accommodation, but helps in finding rental rooms and apartments in the county. NCTS has several contracts with hotels where students can be accommodated at a reduced price:

  • Howard Civil Service International House
  • NTU Hsiu-Chi House
  • NTNU Accommodation
  • Li-Yuan Hotel.

On campus there are nine cafeterias with vending machines, where during school hours students have the opportunity to have a snack and chat with friends.

Activities National Center for Theoretical Sciences, Physics

The center hosts a lot of scientific conferences and seminars with invited speakers from different countries. All students have the opportunity to attend additional lectures, participate in the course of experiments and promote their scientific ideas.

Near NCTS there are several sports centers with swimming pools, gyms and game halls, outdoor areas for roller skating, team games.

Off campus, students can visit the famous xiangshan hiking trails, Yangmingshan National Park, to explore Taiwan's natural culture. The road to the museums of art, history and art galleries will take a little time thanks to the good transport links of the city.

Advantages

  • Included in the TOP-20 best universities in Taiwan

- we recommend to apply one year before the start of the training program,
- some schools have a specific time frame (September-November - please specify an individual school)
- some schools require tests in several stages (UKISET, internal tests of the school: English, mathematics, logics, subjects, interview, some require a personal visit)
- we recommend to apply one year before the start of the program,
- for Foundation and Pathway programs, IELTS and TOEFL certificates are usually required, respectively

- recommended submission one year before the start of the program,
- the deadline normally closes in January, for TOP HEIs and, as a rule, in March in other universities
