International Baccalaureate or Advanced Placement: choosing a school program

Specialized programs of the senior school are interested in parents of teenagers who have to study abroad. Everyone knows that the 10-11-year course of the secondary school is not enough to enter a world-class university. But this does not mean that the road to the educational institutions of Europe, America, Canada for teenagers from the world is closed. Compensate for the lack of academic training for adolescents is offered through specialized training programs. Apply to most of them you canin 9th grade and earlier.

Two well-known programs are the most known: AR (works predominantly in the USA, Canada) and IB (international). Each of them teaches students to think analytically, strive to learn academic disciplines deeper, develops skills of independence, responsibility, motivation for achievements. Programs have similarities and differences. Let us consider them in more detail.

General Information

IW is quoted all over the world. AP is more in Canada , USA . IB is a general education program. In addition to basic subjects, it involves the study of special subjects (for example, art, regional studies), preparation for international examinations, implementation of research projects. In the AR, students choose subjects that meet their further educational goals. Differently recognized programs and structure. AR is designed for a year. It allows high school students to study in depth the priority subjects. Examination at the end of the course is not at all necessary. IB is designed for 2 years. The course is aimed at high school students. Each year of study ends with a compulsory examination. By the results of IB students can be admitted to various universities in the world.

Assessment of knowledge

The level of assignments for both programs is equivalent to the university level. The approach to learning courses is different. In IB is implemented interdisciplinary, in AR emphasis is on preparing for admission to the university for a specific specialization. Knowledge is also evaluated in different ways. Academic achievements of students of AR are assessed by the university and external commission. The program adopted a 5-point assessment system. The final score is set according to the results of the final exam. The choice of subjects for commission commission is limited.

In IB, there are 3 levels of assessments: on the scale of the program, the external commission and the teachers of the school. The rating system is seven-point. In the process of training intermediate sections of knowledge (testing) are conducted. The overall assessment of the subject is influenced by the result of two years of study, examination, research and independent work, student activity.

Teachers

Teaching students for IB are eligible only certified teachers (having the appropriate certificate). They undergo special training, regularly improve their qualifications, attend methodical trainings. Programs of the AR are taught by doctors of sciences. There are no other official criteria for the selection of cadres.

Payment of the course

According to IB, the program is paid for (two-year training at the chosen school). Items and exams are paid separately for AR.

Each program has its own peculiarities. The choice of students is most often determined by the main educational goal and place of higher education. So, in North America, many prefer AP. In the EU, applicants choose IB.
