ChatGPT launches a separate version for children and teenagers

OpenAI has announced that it will launch a separate version of the chatbot for users aged 13–17: it will feature enhanced protection against unwanted content and will place a strong emphasis on academic assistance. However, the assistance is not meant to simply provide ready-made answers, but rather to encourage independent thinking — the chatbot will be aimed at helping students work through topics on their own and arrive at answers through analytical reasoning.

If an OpenAI account belongs to a family, it will be possible to set up separate child and parent accounts within it in order to fine-tune parental controls, configure "quiet hours" (a usage blackout period), and set up a notification mode (if a child's queries appear concerning to the system, it will alert the parents to the risk). Details, however, are sparse: the company clarified that it will limit the volume of information shared and will focus on situations where reaching out to people outside a digital service may be especially important. Parental controls will only be enabled with the consent of both parties: the parent and the child.

There is no age verification when signing up for ChatGPT; however, the system can already analyze a variety of signals (queries, subject matter, spelling, writing style) to estimate a user's age. If the system determines that a user is under 18, the version will automatically switch to the teen mode.

Based on OpenAI's observations, unhealthy dependence on technology — emotional dependence in particular — hits younger users hardest. It is important to demonstrate to teenagers that even the most advanced and capable AI model has no feelings or consciousness, that it is impossible to form a personal relationship with it, and that it should not be treated as a human being.
