Education in Thailand is under the control of the royal family. Every year, almost a fifth of the budget is spent on the development of the education sector, and this is bearing fruit: half a century ago, a child from a peasant family received a maximum of three classes of general education, now all children are required to complete 12 years of secondary school.
Thailand's secondary school consists of two stages: primary and secondary school. Each is designed for 6 years of study, within the stage they are divided into two levels of three years. After the third level, at the age of 15, students must decide on their future and choose one of the directions: academic or vocational education.
Levels of secondary education:
Step | Level | Age |
Primary education | Prathom 1-3 | 6-8 |
Prathom 4-6 | 9-11 | |
Secondary education | Matthayom 1-3 | 12-14 |
Matthayom 4-6 | 15-17 |
The Thai secondary school curriculum includes compulsory and additional classes that the student chooses. After the end of the lessons, most of the children remain at school: at this time, numerous circles, sports sections, hobby groups begin to work. Each school day begins with a general line, and in some educational institutions with morning exercises.

Public schools in Thailand for foreign students
There are two types of public schools in Thailand: secular and temple, religious. Only boys can study in schools at Buddhist temples: in addition to general subjects, students study ancient religious texts and meditate.
The best Thai school for many years is considered the state Mahidol Wittayanusorn School. This institution is for very gifted children and getting into is very difficult: annually up to 20,000 applications are submitted for admission to this school, of which only 240 are accepted. Education here is fully free, since the school is fully funded by the government. The special status of this institution is already indicated by the fact that the school director is directly subordinate to the Minister of Finance. The program is aimed at studying the exact sciences and mathematics. Each graduate must develop and successfully defend his own project.
Private and international schools in Thailand: rankings, reviews
Most foreign students who have moved to Thailand choose to study in private or international schools.
The royal family supports the initiative to create private schools: in fact, anyone can register a private educational institution, it is enough to get a license and confirm it once a year. Such a policy has given rise to a huge number of schools in which the quality of education is at a very low level. Finding a really good private school is not easy.
There are private schools in Thailand with foreign teachers working according to international educational standards: as a rule, they are chosen when they plan to return to their homeland or if only a few years are left to finish secondary education.
Best international schools in Thailand
There are international schools in all major cities of Thailand: the program can be British, American, German or international. The advantage of such educational institutions is a high level of knowledge, an international diploma; for example, Thai schools often offer international undergraduate (IB) programs. - Phuket International Kindergarden & School, Phuket;
- Head Start, Phuket;

- registration fee (from 5000);
- entrance fee (subject to enrollment - from 150,000). Is not refundable;
- deposit (30000-50000). Returned, paid once;
