Study in Slovenia. 3 best institutions in Slovenia

A child can be enrolled in kindergarten from 11 months of age. This is not a mandatory requirement for a child's future education in the country, however many parents in Slovenia still prefer to send their child to kindergarten.

Children are sent there from the age of 6, and primary school education ends at the age of 15. Citizens of the country and foreign nationals attend schools for 9 years and receive education in Slovenia free of charge. At the end of this stage, students participate in the National Knowledge Assessment — an exam. Under Slovenian law, all children are required to complete basic general education, that is, to finish primary school. After this, students enter secondary educational institutions in Slovenia: the choice of institution depends on the student's interests and their exam grades.

Incidentally, it is possible to leave after the seventh grade — in that case, the student will enroll in a vocational program to acquire applied skills. It is also possible to return: to do so, one must pass an entrance examination for admission to a vocational school.

After completing 9th grade, students independently choose a program to continue their studies in Slovenia. They have three paths to choose from:

1. Secondary vocational education: 3 years. The program includes the study of applied professions.
2. Secondary technical and vocational education. During the course of study, there is an in-depth immersion in economic or technical specializations for future enrollment in a college or university.
3. General secondary education: 4 years. Study at gymnasiums for excellent preparation for university admission.

General education gymnasiums are further divided into four types: general (core subjects), classical (core subjects, Latin and philosophy), with in-depth study of languages or sciences, and sports.

To continue their studies in Slovenia, applicants have two options to choose from: a vocational college or a university. Studying in Slovenia at a vocational college takes two years. The college helps students acquire and develop good practical skills for working in fields such as tourism, logistics, economics, computer science, security, and others.

Studying in Slovenia at a university can take two to four years, with the exact duration depending on the chosen level and field of study. Universities help students gain deeper academic knowledge taught according to European standards and qualification levels: bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs. 

Four universities in the country offer English-language academic programs: the University of Ljubljana, the University of Maribor, the University of Primorska in Koper, and the University of Nova Gorica.
