Until the beginning of the twentieth century, economics education in secondary schools in Europe was seen as part of a comprehensive education program; they began to talk seriously about this topic only after the end of World War II.
In 1951, following the creation of the Joint Council for Economic Education in Europe two years earlier, a series of pedagogical conferences were held in the United States . Their result was the publication of several reports summarizing and systematizing the efforts of economists and teachers of economics from different countries aimed at the development of economic education in the format of secondary school.
However, international and even national standards were still far away. According to Eurostat statistics, 22% of high school students in 2000 studied the course of economic theory, and another 39% received an understanding of key economic concepts in the framework of other courses (most often history or geography, social studies); In 2020, it was already about 41% and 49%, respectively.
Let's talk about some of the most interesting national practices.
