British universities now teach more students remotely than offline — for the first time in history

TNE (Transnational Education) is the opportunity to study accredited university programs without traveling to the country where the university is actually located. Essentially, it's well-organized distance learning.

The United Kingdom has long been developing its TNE sector, and in the 2024/25 academic year it reached, for the first time in history, the point where the number of TNE students exceeded the number of international students studying in Britain: 699,660 people versus 681,430. The number of TNE students has grown by 36.6% over 7 years, adding an average of 7% per year.

British TNE programs are now available in 229 countries and territories, from 183 British educational institutions. The main «consumer» is the Asian region: almost 51% of TNE students. Next comes Europe (16.3%), the Middle East (14.8%), Africa (12.5%), North America (4.4%), and South America (0.7%).

Partnership programs are growing the fastest: they showed student growth of 51.4% over 5 years. Study at overseas campuses also increased numerically (by 30.3%), while distance programs grew by 6.8%.

UUKi notes that fewer than 3% of students worldwide pursue higher education outside their own country. Most students still prefer not to move abroad, so TNE allows British universities to meet international demand without requiring students to change their country of residence.

In 2026, the UK government presented an updated education strategy, and its goals include increasing the export of educational services to £40 billion a year by 2030. Transnational education, or TNE, is considered one of the key areas of growth.
