Like other states in the United States, the education system in New York City consists of three levels: primary, secondary, and tertiary.
- At the primary level, children study from kindergarten to 5-6 grades of school.
- At the secondary level, students move on to secondary schools, where they study from grades 7 to 12.
- The highest level of education includes colleges and universities that offer a variety of programs of study.
Public education in the state is overseen by the State University of New York (USNY) and the New York State Department of Education.
