Every year almost 30 thousand foreign students come here to get a higher education (bachelor, master and doctoral). The structure of the SBU includes 10 high schools and 3 colleges where students can get a degree in popular specialties: altogether more than 300 academic programs of different levels.
The following faculties are offered for teaching young people:
Students must complete entry requirements to complete a bachelor’s degree. In total, SBU offers over 100 popular and sought-after specializations in various areas. Studying time is 4 years.
Getting a master's degree will require from those who wish to have a diploma of the first stage of higher education (bachelor degree). At the second stage in Stony Brook is available about 50 destinations to explore.
In addition to the master's degree, anyone can continue their studies and get a doctoral degree in the chosen direction: for this, students conduct independent research on the selected problem, and then defend the final work before the commission of the university.
There are about 30 student residences throughout the SBU territory, and 8 cafes and canteens are provided for meals, where a varied menu is offered - international cuisine, vegetarian and even hypoallergenic.
When assigning students to dormitories, administrators usually lodge students as close as possible to the chosen college or high school. There are several accommodation formats available on campus:
In both types of hostels there are common lounges: board games, billiards, table tennis, TV. The living rooms of all residences are beautifully furnished.
The administration of Stony Brook is thinking about the safety of its students, so a security system is in place throughout the campus. A special company Emergency Management Office is responsible for the solution of all questions from this area. Also, young people have an application to call the police themselves if necessary. For 24 hours, the campus is under video surveillance.
The internal policy of the University SBU implies that social activities of the school are just as important as the academic process, so more than 400 student communities, clubs and organizations that offer activities for every taste operate on the basis of the University of Stony Brook. Every year there are various festivals, competitions and other events in which not only students are involved, but also teachers and invited guests. All these activities are reflected in local newspapers: they are printed or electronic publications with different target audiences, there is a radio and its own television.
SBU has a student support service for foreign students, which helps young people to quickly adapt to a new school abroad.
Stony Brook University is located in the northeastern United States on Long Island. There are many historical museums and nature reserves that can be visited during their free time.
