Education information

Located on the Atlantic coast, the best universities in Miami have been attracting foreign students for study and recreation for many years - the town belongs to the state of Florida, where the sun shines almost all year round. The place has an abundance of entertainment and beaches, so most foreign students choose short-term educational programs: language schools or summer camps: studying in universities in Miami  is becoming more and more popular every year. Among the long-term programs, advanced classes, college preparatory courses and higher education are common.

The U.S. Higher Education System

The U.S. higher education system includes

  • Baccalaureate (Bachelor's degree).
  • Magistracy (Master's degree).
  • Graduate  (PhD or ScD).

Undergraduate studies last 4 years and the duration may vary depending on the number of subjects chosen. Master's programs are designed for 1.5-2 years, and graduate studies - 3-6 years.

American universities are divided into community colleges and universities. Community colleges offer vocational education and associate degrees. Universities offer undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate, MBA and certificate programs.

The academic year may vary slightly from university to university, but the standard U.S. academic year begins in late August (or early September) and ends in late May. The academic year may consist of two semesters (18 weeks each), "quarters" or "trimesters". In addition, U.S. universities often offer students a summer term (6 or 8 weeks) - a good way to attend classes in the summer if need to speed up the process of earning a diploma or, for example, reduce the teaching load during that time. Major study periods, or if need to retake courses. There are at least two major breaks during the academic year: two to four weeks of Christmas break and a week of "spring break" in early March or mid-April.

Benefits of studying at universities in Miami

  1. Top ranking of all major U.S. institutions
  2. Virtually unlimited choices of majors
  3. Recognition of diplomas and science degrees from U.S. universities and colleges around the world
  4. Education is practice-oriented! Educational programs often work closely with leading companies and corporations that need real talent!
  5. The United States is a country of immigrants. No one of any color or culture is a black sheep here. This country is tolerant of any religion, ethnicity, or culture. Therefore, it is easier for beginners to adapt and feel "at home" here.
  6. Here, technology is so perfect and advanced that it permeates even the most specific areas of life, but also the field of education. High school graduates, even in the most modern production, do not feel "behind" and are well informed about all the latest technological trends.
  7. The structure of the educational program allows students to decide for themselves, as a rule, which courses to take in a given semester, how many hours to take, etc. Learn comfortably and responsibly in this way.
  8. Experience independent life on campus. The classic American campus offers everything for a happy and fulfilling life: comfortable buildings to study and live in, sports facilities and playgrounds, restaurants, cafes and clubs, and opportunities to work in spare time, etc.
  9. Globalization. The American education system is universal. It is not concerned with "narrow" processes, but with global processes and global values. This globalization is what makes American universities so popular and prestigious. It is no coincidence that so many of the world's political, economic and scientific leaders have graduated from American universities.

How to Apply to the top universities in Miami

To apply for a bachelor's degree at the University, applicants must provide the following packet of documents:

  • A completed application form.
  • A certificate or statement with grades.
  • An IELTS or TOEFL certificate of English proficiency.
  • SAT or ACT test scores for knowledge of the school curriculum.
  • A letter of motivation.
  • Extracurricular achievements (athletic categories and victories in competitions, volunteer service, Olympic achievements, etc.).
  • Letters of recommendation.

Admission requirements may vary depending on college rankings. For example, if want to get into a top universities in Miami , then need to get at least a 7.0 on the IELTS or 100 on the TOEFL, have only excellent scores on school certificates, pass the SAT with a score of 1590 or higher, provide the strongest motivation letter, and perform well in interviews. And to get into a good but lower scoring college, an IELTS score of 6.0 - 6.5 and an SAT score of 1250-1350 is sufficient. Note that universities do not have a minimum SAT score requirement; will only find information on the average scores of those who have already enrolled. Keep in mind that the entire document package is decisive for the admissions committee, meaning that if GPA is slightly below the average for applicants, then in order to compensate for this fact, SAT scores must be above average.

It is possible to apply to USA twice a year: Early Action  and Regular Decision. During Early Action, documents are submitted to only one private college , while during Regular Decision, can already apply to an unlimited number of colleges at the same time. It is recommended that select some of the most prestigious and difficult to enter universities that would most like to attend, some of the lesser known but strong programs in field, and some of the easiest to enter given IELTS score and average certificate score to enter.

For international students, there are several simpler ways to apply.

Articulated program preparatory courses that last from 4 to 12 months. In this case, the SAT and ACT are not required at all. the subjects students take in the bridging course count towards their undergraduate curriculum, so upon successful completion of the course they can enter directly into their second year of university. Therefore, the duration of education does not increase.

It is possible also enroll in an undergraduate program at a U.S. university having previously studied for two years at a university (community college) where the admission requirements are typically lower. Upon graduation, students will receive an associate degree in their major - an intermediate stage on the path to a bachelor's degree - with immediate entry into the third year of college if all credits are transferred, and partial entry into the second year if credits are transferred. Usually this method saves not only time but also money, as it is cheaper to study at a local university.

To enter the Magistrate's Court, a foreign student must:

  • Complete an application form.
  • Take the GRE or GMAT test, if required.
  • Provide a score on one of the international English language exams: IELTS or TOEFL. The requirements for a master's degree are higher than those for a bachelor's degree, usually requiring a minimum score of 6.5 - 7.0 on the IELTS or 89 - 100 on the TOEFL.
  • Provide a bachelor's degree or a summary of grades.
  • Write a letter of motivation.
  • Receiving a letter of recommendation.
  • Submitting a resume.
  • Have work experience and internship experience.
  • Demonstrate extracurricular activities.

Alternatively, students can enroll in a 4 to 12 month pre-master's program. The main advantage of this program is that it usually does not require passing the GMAT, and the IELTS or TOEFL requirements may be lower than those required for direct enrollment in a master's program.

If do not have the opportunity to study for several years at a university, certificate programs will come in handy. They are designed for people who already have a first degree or years of work experience and want to earn a diploma from a prestigious U.S. university in the shortest possible time. Typically certificate programs are designed to last 3, 6 or 9 months. If a full-time program lasting 9 months or longer is chosen, at the end of the program, students may be granted the right to work in the United States for one year. It is easier and cheaper to participate in this intensive education. At the same time, the diploma earned is highly valued in the U.S. and abroad, and the exchange experience and new contacts gained will certainly come in handy in the future.
