St. Thomas University is a private Catholic university, founded in 1946 in Cuba. In 1961, Fidel Castro's militia confiscated the university’s land and property, expelled students and priests, after which the students fled to Miami and organized a men's Catholic college there. In 1961, the college received the status of a higher educational institution and today offers applicants 23 undergraduate specialties, 24 master's programs, 4 doctoral programs.

The university management pays special attention to the sports development of students. University sports teams are members of the National Association of Inter-University Athletics. Students participate in competitions in tennis, swimming, athletics, softball, volleyball, diving, wrestling, etc. Last year, 12 of the 14 sports teams of the university became winners of the competition.

The university library, in addition to the main fund, contains a collection of Archbishop John C. Favalora. In 2008, a museum was opened, which is accessible to tourists and citizens.
