Why is grass planted on rooftops in Scandinavia?

Scandinavian style in the interior is incredibly popular, IKEA stores have spread around the world, offering customers easy-to-assemble and easy-to-use pieces of furniture and stylish interior décor. An ordinary tea cup from "Ikea" unites and unites a Russian with a resident of distant Australia or America.

In addition to the internal filling of the home, the appearance is important - they meet, as you know, by clothes. The visiting card of residential buildings in the Scandinavian countries is green roofs. Soft, fluffy green lawns, planted directly on the roofs, give comfort and fabulous look to the houses. In addition to grass, shrubs, flowers and even small trees are planted.

The tradition of breaking the lawn on the roof of the house is rooted in antiquity. Besides being practical and eco-friendly, it's a great disguise from enemies. Judge for yourself, solid advantages:

  • The substrate of turf and dry bark in combination with grass contribute to excellent thermal insulation.
  • Natural materials perfectly protect the home from moisture.
  • On hot summer days, a lively lawn on the roof protects the house from the scorching rays of the sun.
  • Caring for a green roof does not require much effort, the main thing is watering, which occurs in a natural way (rain to help!).

There are also disadvantages:

  • The lawn on the ground and the lawn on the roof are different things, and it is more difficult and more expensive to organize the second one - you will not be able to save.
  • Those who dare to green roof must strictly adhere to the construction technology: the slightest mistake will lead to a leak or to the collapse of the roof.
  • The grass is only seemingly light and airy: in fact, the roof is heavy, so you need strong load-bearing walls and supports of the house.

Green grass is only the tip of the iceberg, a beautiful decoration that pleases the eye of the owner and neighbors. Under it hides a layer of clay with dry bark laid on top. For strength, the bark is impregnated with sheep fat, then straw, peat and moss are laid - a "layer cake" is obtained, which serves as the soil for the future lawn.

So, the house is built, the lawn is planted, the rain is responsible for watering, and how to mow the lawn? In the old days, people used goats and geese, which were grazed on the roofs - better than any lawn mower! Today they use modern gadgets for haymaking.

Interestingly, living roofs took root in the Scandinavian countries, outside of which this phenomenon is rare. There are several reasons:

  • Climatic conditions that give the right level of humidity for grass growth are ideal in the Scandinavian countries.
  • The cost of a green roof and the rise in the cost of building a house as a whole.
