University of Szeged (SZTE)

Saged University is the state higher educational institution of the Hungarian state. The time of the University of Szeged (SZTE) is the Middle Ages. In 1581 this university accepted the first students for education. The main building of the university is located in the city of Saged.

In QS Sustainability 2026, the university ranked 338th in the world, 161st in Europe, and second in Hungary. For environmentally sustainable activities and measures to reduce environmental impact, it made the European top 100. In Hungary, the university received the best ratings for research in the interest of a sustainable future and the impact of its educational activities on society.

Albert Szent-Györgyi, associated with the Faculty of Medicine, received the Nobel Prize in 1937 largely for the results of research conducted in Szeged. Among student achievements are a second-year student's absolute first place among flutists aged 18–22 at the 2026 Jean-Philippe Rameau International Competition and the special Exceptional Interpretation prize for an outstanding interpretation. A third-year undergraduate student in Performing Arts, specializing in Classical Piano, received third prize at the New York International Music Competition in the advanced piano category II.

The university runs an Interdisciplinary Center for Advanced Research, Development and Innovation. Climate change is studied by the interdisciplinary SZTE IKIKK group. Among its research areas:

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences operates the Szeged University Press academic publishing house. It plans to publish humanities and social science books in Hungarian and foreign languages, primarily English, in the Litterae Humaniores, Orbis Pictus, and Studia Novorum series. The main format is open-access digital editions with print-on-demand availability.
