The Institute of International Education has published new statistics: the total number of foreign students fell by 1%, and the number of initial applicants was 17% less than last fall. The main reason for the decline in interest in American education, experts call the tightening of visa requirements and entry restrictions imposed by the administration of the United States of America. International students face serious difficulties in obtaining a student visa and crossing the border, especially if they come from Asian and African countries.
There is a positive trend only among foreigners who enter the Optional Practical Studying program (it allows students from abroad to continue working after graduation). The number of participants in this program increased by 14%, which confirms the importance of this tool for the attractiveness of American education in such difficult times.
Most U.S. universities continue to actively attract international students and expand opportunities for cooperation with foreign institutions. Universities place a special emphasis on students from Vietnam, India, Brazil and South Korea - from these countries they strive to attract the most promising candidates.
Many experts talk about the need to reform the visa regime and simplify entry procedures in order to maintain the leadership of the United States of America in the higher education sector at the international level. But so far, American politics has only created obstacles for foreign students. At the same time, competition from Europe and Canada is intensifying, which offer more loyal conditions for admission and after graduation.
