The British non-profit organization Mosaik Education, in partnership with Higher Ed Partners UK, has inspired several leading British universities to make a gesture of goodwill. Special distance transnational education (TNE) programs or master's degrees will be available online, with real diplomas awarded upon completion, for those applicants who were unable to obtain a student visa to the UK.
The project will help foreign applicants who have fallen under the so-called visa brake: the UK Home Office temporarily suspended the processing of student visa applications from citizens of Cameroon, Myanmar, Afghanistan, and Sudan in spring 2026. The argument is that such students too often apply for asylum after arriving in the country, making the student visa merely a pretext. In practice, students from these countries are currently unable to come to the UK to study and cannot apply for scholarships (including the generous Chevening).
19 fully funded places have already been opened — the following universities have joined the project:
- King's College London,
- University of London,
- University of Leicester,
- University of Northampton,
- University of St Andrews,
- Cardiff University,
- Birkbeck, University of London,
- University of Salford,
- Aberystwyth University.
A dedicated Global Response Platform has already been created to facilitate interaction with humanitarian organizations, the selection and communication with candidates, so that by the end of 2026 the number of places on the program is planned to increase to 50.
The Mosaik Education project fits into the broader trend of transnational education (TNE) development — a network of online (distance) education opportunities at British universities even without traveling to the United Kingdom (with reasons that may vary: visa-related, political, or humanitarian).
