How do American universities punish plagiarism and why they are so ruthless?

Academic integrity is a key factor that underpins the entire higher education system in the United States of America. From school age, students are taught strict adherence to the rules of self-study.

No educational institution in America encourages dishonesty of the student, and at the slightest suspicion of cheating or plagiarism, an investigation will be conducted, during which the student caught can be punished very severely.

The Value of Academic Integrity in the U.S.

Every student who gets to a university in the United States will face the fact that every teacher will strictly prohibit copying his work or using other people's information without quoting. If a non-original text is found in the work, not enclosed in quotation marks, this will immediately be perceived as plagiarism, tough sanctions will be taken against the student. The minimum loss for the cheater is the lowest score for the work, the maximum is expulsion from the university without the possibility of recovery.

Often unfamiliar with the principles of academic value, foreign students are subjected to harsh measures that are applied to them in case of plagiarism or borrowing someone else's material. In 2015 alone, more than 8,000 students from China were expelled from American universities.

How to observe the principles of honesty in universities

To prepare oneself for the new strict system of checking works for plagiarism, the applicant can get acquainted with information on the principles of academic honesty on the official websites of the educational institution. On them you can find special brochures for applicants, where examples of the correct citation and use of other people's works are published. Also, the texts explain the reasons for the harmfulness of plagiarism.

A student who violates the standards of work performance not only risks getting an unsatisfactory mark or becoming expelled, but also directly interferes with his development, because he does not learn to independently search for and analyze information, depriving himself of mastering the skills necessary in future work.

Many universities in America conduct courses on the development of academic honesty. Anyone can enroll in a special program, but in some educational institutions this course is mandatory for all new foreign students. To start the main classes, you must take an online course entirely devoted to the rules of honest work with subjects. After preliminary training, the applicant receives the right to go to classes.

Other higher education institutions are limited only to an introductory lecture for students who have passed the competition: it briefly tells the basic principles, the following of which is mandatory during training. Further, the task of educating students about honesty falls on teachers, who can give the necessary advice or share a useful source of information.

It is believed that following the ideals of academic value, the student will not only be a diligent student and will easily receive a long-awaited diploma, but in the future will become a successful person who will be helped by the skills of independent search and analysis of material acquired at the university.
