Studying in New Zealand - facts and perspectives for foreign students

New Zealand for foreign students is not only a promising place to get one of the best education in the world, but also a country attractive in many respects - economic growth, nature, climate and culture.

  • general description

New Zealand is a developed country in Polynesia, located on two large and about 700 small islands. The country is geographically isolated: its closest neighbours are Australia, New Caledonia and Fiji. The country is known for its amazing nature: geysers, beaches, forests, grottoes and glaciers.

  • Climate conditions

The climate in the country is warm subtropical in the north and cool temperate in the south, in the mountains - severe alpine. The Southern Alps divide the country in half with two different weather conditions. The average annual temperature is from + 10С in the southern part and up to + 16С in the north. The hottest months are January and February, and July is the coldest. The image of the country has become a policy of preserving the islands green and clean, the wonders of nature due to this are preserved here almost in its original form.

  • Language

Three languages have official status: Maori, English, and New Zealand Sign Language. 96% of the population speak English - this is the main language of communication, the language of the media and literature. English here has a New Zealand dialect close to Australian, but most of all this dialect is close to the English version in the southern parts of England, where it has the characteristic features of a Scottish and Irish accent.

  • Economy

In a country with a developed export-oriented market economy, the main areas are the following: agriculture, manufacturing and food processing, tourism.

  • Culture

This is a country with multicultural traditions, which is influenced by the peoples of the British Isles, Polynesian peoples, peoples of Asia and Western European civilizations. Art in New Zealand began to develop actively in the twentieth century: the country is known for talented representatives of the film industry - Peter Jackson, Jane Campion and others.

  • Leisure activities

Leading Language Schools in New Zealand

Studying in language schools in New Zealand is in many ways similar to European ones. The basis of effective study is complete language immersion. There are different age groups: junior (7-14 years), teenage (14-17), seniors (17-25) and 25+, there are 50+ groups.

In order to determine the level of students' knowledge, before the start of classes, all students pass the test. Based on the results, they are divided into groups.

So, all students study with peers representing different nationalities and with approximately the same level of knowledge. Teachers are accredited to work with foreign students, practice modern teaching methods. Teachers adhere to a communicative approach, according to which students should take an active part in the educational process and speak more than a teacher.

Classes in language schools have a democratic style, relations with teachers are warm and friendly. The guys get acquainted with the press, films and music in English, learn about the culture of the country. The purpose of the classical courses is to give the basic skills and abilities for language practice: communicative skill, listening, reading and writing. Many foreign students suffer from a language barrier, but in interesting cultural environment they can easily get rid of it.

The number of lessons depends on the type of course and its intensity, but, as a rule, from 15 to 30 lessons per week are expected, mainly in the first half of the day. Additional tests are possible, to determine the language progress. At the end of their studies, students write a final test, where it is determined at what level the students graduate from a school. The results are included in the certificates.

Admission to the New Zealand Language School

Students who wish to study at a New Zealand language school will need to go through a series of steps to receive an invitation letter from the chosen school:

  • collect a package of documents
  • choose the right course
  • fill out a school application
  • pay tuition fees
  • wait for an invitation letter.

Next, you need to go through a difficult procedure for obtaining a New Zealand visa. As a rule, linguistic centers do not put forward special requirements for applicants, with the exception of advanced courses, for example, “Business and vacation courses in New Zealand”. For effective studying, a student must have decent knowledge base, intermediate language proficiency.
