In 1883, Harvard began using letters to denote academic performance: A, D, C, D, F. Since that time, American schools and universities began to use this system of grading:

- C - "satisfactory", from 70% to 80% of the task;
- D - "bad", 60% -70% of execution;
- F - "unsatisfactory", 0% -59% of the task.

Grade F comes from the English word fail, which means complete failure of the student.

In addition, there is a designation: P, S, N, U, which means "offset", "average score", "non-pass" and "unsatisfactory" , respectively. Grades F and D in colleges serve as a reason for expulsion.
