All students at Ohio State University will learn to work with AI

Artificial intelligence is increasingly becoming part of everyday life, and international universities, such as Ohio State University, can no longer ignore this: starting this fall, students across all programs are in for an important change — a course dedicated to the competent and responsible use of AI will be added to the curriculum. The new initiative has been named AI Fluency. Its goal is not just to introduce students to technology, but to teach them to confidently apply it in their studies and future careers.

According to the president of Ohio State University, AI is changing almost every field today, and it is important that graduates do not lag behind, but rather set the tone in their profession. Students will be allowed to use neural networks as a tool: to search for information, generate ideas, or help with work, but there is a clear rule — no copy-paste. Works made entirely with the help of AI cannot be passed off as your own.

The studying will be organized in stages.

  • First, there will be an introductory seminar where students will get acquainted with the possibilities of generative AI.
  • Then there is the Unlocking Generative AI course, which will provide practical skills in working with such tools.
  • Learning elements will also be introduced into the first-year support program to help them adapt to the new educational environment faster.

The changes will also affect teachers: they will receive recommendations for assessing work, taking into account the use of AI, in order to maintain honesty and transparency in teaching.

At the same time, Ohio State will increase funding — this is necessary to update existing courses and create new ones where technologies will be integrated meaningfully, rather than formally. Interestingly, not everyone in the academic community supports bans on AI.

For example, associate professor of philosophy Stephen Brown believes that completely abandoning such tools is a mistake.: in his opinion, it is much more important to teach students how to use them correctly, because ignoring one of the most powerful technologies of our time is dangerous and stupid.

The impetus for launching the program was real data: a study by the Pew Center showed that in 2024, 26% of teenagers already used ChatGPT to do their homework, which is twice as much as a year earlier. Obviously, AI has already become a part of the educational process — even without official permission.
