Washington and Jefferson College (W&J College or W&J) is a private liberal arts college in Washington, Pennsylvania. The two colleges merged in 1865 to form Washington and Jefferson College.

The academic emphasis of the college is on the humanities and natural sciences with an emphasis on preparing students for admission to graduate school and vocational schools.

Almost all students live on campus and approximately one-third are members of fraternities or women's clubs.

Teachers, known for their research, publications, works of art and unique teaching methods, support the intellectual activity of students and professionally prepare for work in the specialty.

The curriculum focuses on traditional liberal arts education and pre-professional classes. All first-semester freshmen are required to take the First Year Seminar course, which introduces new students to a variety of lectures, concerts, performances, and trips to museums or galleries based on a different course topic chosen each year.

In addition to obtaining an academic specialty, students must meet the general education requirements of the college, which include classes in the arts, humanities, science and mathematics, foreign languages, cultural diversity and academic skills, including writing, oral communication. In addition, all students must meet the physical education requirements.

At W&J, students will gain a robust, comprehensive learning experience by completing two courses of study, which may include dual basic education or a combination of basic and continuing education.

98% of W&J students live on campus for four years of study. First-year students are placed in pairs (with roommates) in first-year dormitories depending on their own preferences. The professional staff in the dormitory constantly supports students and helps in building a single community.

W&J Dining operates three restaurants on campus: The Commons Café, G&T's Grill and X'Prez'O.

The college has a rich history of competing literary societies, dating back to the union of Jefferson and Washington Colleges. The athletic program competes in NCAA Division III.

The Newman Club is a Catholic ministry on campus. Participants organize evenings on Wednesdays, every week they arrange home dinners, which follow Mass at 17:30 and Sunday Mass at 17:00.

Washington and Jefferson College is home to eight Fraternity & Sorority Life organizations. Four fraternities are recognized on campus: Alpha Tau Omega, Beta Theta Pi, Delta Tau Delta and Phi Kappa Psi. Four NPC women's societies are recognized at W&J: Delta Gamma, Kappa Alpha Theta, Kappa Kappa Gamma and Pi Beta Phi. All organizations are located on campus in the college's home on Chestnut Street.

The Center for Ethical Leadership supports college-wide opportunities for students to become innovators in their professions and communities. Regardless of the specialty or field of activity of students, teachers ensure that students become proficient in identifying and critically studying ethical issues.

The local library is very popular. It's a huge valuable resource on campus for online databases, magazines, books, e-books, DVDs, and more. Students also have access to computers, printers, and scanners. Local librarians can help navigate the vast array of resources available for academic and recreational use. A personal librarian assigned to each student of the course will support the development of information literacy skills during the first year.

Washington and Jefferson College takes a comprehensive approach to evaluating admission applications, weighting each of the individual components in the following order:

• High school performance

An applicant's average score in high school and class class (if any) will be considered in the context of the rigor of their chosen curriculum. The Admissions Committee positively assesses the high results in the advanced placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB) and College in High School courses.

• Test Results

Standardized test scores are only one factor in the admission process and serve to validate a student's academic potential combined with their high school performance. The average range of 50% is usually 1060-1260 points in the SAT Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing sections, and the overall ACT score is 24-30.

• Participation in co-education and achievements – portfolio, certificates and medals

The Highest Merit Scholarship is awarded to students aspiring to become academic leaders.

Institutional, state, and federal grants can help offset the cost of studying at W&J. Nearly every student receives financial aid from W&J College.

The Graduate Referral Award offers college graduates the opportunity to refer prospective students to W&J. Referred students, once they are admitted to the College, will receive a $1,000 award as part of their financial aid package.

• William Herzler Memorial Scholarship

This renewable scholarship is provided to select students from Juniata County and is funded by a generous donation made to W&J by the Herzler family. The annual amount of this award is determined by the income received from the scholarship fund, and over the past four years has covered more than 90% of the annual costs of studying at W&J.

• Pennsylvania Education and Training Grant Program "Chafi"

This federally funded program offers grants to Pennsylvania undergraduate undergraduate students coming from foster care.

• Pittsburgh Promise Scholarship

Students who have graduated from Pittsburgh Public School or one of its charter high schools are eligible for this scholarship.

• W&J College Work Study

This employment program is supported by the College and allows students who are not eligible for federal work training to work on campus.

Through both of these employment programs, the College is able to offer about 600 job openings in more than 50 departments, as well as employment opportunities in the community.
