Mendel University in Brno

Mendelova univerzita v Brně or Mendel University in Brno (abbreviated as MENDELU) is an educational institution of state type in the Czech Republic, which has been active in scientific work since the distant 1919. Due to the successful location of the university within the borders of Brno, students enjoy all the modern benefits, both of country life and rich urban life.

We are talking about a higher educational institution, which is included in the TOP-20 of Czech universities for prestige, as well as in the TOP-5 percent of the world's educational institutions in the quality of education.

Bachelor's and master's students from the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology and the Faculty of AgriSciences participate in coffee research. They have completed several theses on the subject.

While designing a wakeboarding park in Cambodia, a student team used photogrammetry to create a three-dimensional model of the site. The model showed the vegetation, buildings, and terrain to support the design work.

A budget of nearly CZK 80 million has been approved for a project to develop a modern, sustainable academic environment at MENDELU. Its goals include developing instructors' teaching skills, improving educational quality, and refining the university's internal assessment of that quality. The project also aims to review the structure of study and reduce student dropout rates. The university plans to introduce new programs and update some existing ones.

The accessibility project includes improvements to student advising. The university plans to develop methods for working with students with special needs.

MENDELU comprises:

The university also has a Department of Fisheries and Hydrobiology.

MENDELU's research on coffee cultivation began in the Peruvian region of Selva Central. Researchers later took measurements in Nicaragua, Cambodia, Costa Rica, and Mexico. They study how tree cover affects coffee plants, adaptation to climate change, and opportunities for growers to participate in carbon trading.

The study in Peru did not find that shade increased the incidence of coffee rust. Planting density and the age of the coffee plants had a greater effect. In Cambodia, researchers found no difference in the size of robusta beans grown with and without shade.

MENDELU announced that its scientists would participate in Hungry EcoCities, a European project exploring the future of urban food supplies. The project was announced with a duration of almost 4 years and a total budget of 2.8 million euros. The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry was assigned to develop a virtual laboratory, advise on its design, and test it.

Students developed the basic site layout for a wakeboarding park for ICF Cambodia. The design combined wakeboarding with other recreational activities. The material prepared at the Faculty of Horticulture in Lednice became the basis for implementing the project.

A MENDELU graduate helped decode the complex genomes of crops, including wheat, using a unique method of chromosome isolation.

After Christmas 2024, around 170 of the 900 potted fir trees sold were returned to the university forests. A total of 300 people took part in the planting.

MENDELU's event calendar includes:

• MENDELU is a member of the HEROES European university alliance,
• The alliance plans to establish a joint applied research center for international projects involving local communities, businesses, and partners abroad,
• The alliance plans to expand learning opportunities leading to micro-certificates,
• One of the goals of HEROES is to support the development of joint bachelor's and master's programs,
• Cooperation with a Finnish partner university covers bioeconomics, horticulture, garden architecture, landscaping, food and environmental technologies, geographical information systems, wood technology, and sustainable development.

The university participates in international student and faculty exchange programs. MENDELU has a university-wide library, student residence halls, a farm in Žabčice, and a campus in Lednice.

MENDELU secured nearly CZK 385 million to renovate its infrastructure and improve learning conditions. The project includes:

• Modernizing the university-wide library,
• Establishing the MENDELU Innovation Hub in the renovated Building K as a space for student projects, learning, and innovation,
• Upgrading and expanding laboratory and technical equipment.

The university was awarded a further nearly CZK 20 million for a project promoting equality, inclusion, and accessibility on its Brno campus. Plans include barrier-free access, improved wayfinding, and specialized equipment for students with special needs.

The university operates Hrášek, a preschool for children of employees and students. It also accepts other children when places are available. The preschool is housed in the Jan Amos Komenský residence halls.

In order to join the ranks of students in higher education institutions, it is necessary to prepare in advance and pass the required documentation on past progress and results of exams. At the same time, about 55 percent of applicants pass exams successfully, but the situation may differ slightly depending on the faculty and specialization. Each academic year is traditionally divided into two semesters.
