In 1918, a medical faculty was opened at Tbilisi State University - this event marked the beginning of higher medical education in Georgia. In 1930, the Tbilisi State Medical Institute was established on the basis of the medical faculty, but in 1992 the institute was renamed Tbilisi State Medical University in accordance with the new stage of development of the university. In 2006, the medical university was combined with the state medical academy, which enabled the university to develop postgraduate medical education.
