The sector of private school education in Great Britain is currently going through a difficult period. One recent example is the well-known school Malvern St James in Worcestershire county: the institution recently announced plans to close by the end of the current academic year. This closure is not a sudden move, but the result of accumulated problems. The main reason is a prolonged decline in student numbers: despite attempts to change the situation, enrolment continued to fall, and at some point the school found that sustaining its operations had become difficult.
Additionally, external factors increased the pressure:
- The introduction of VAT on tuition at private schools across the country,
- Rising staff costs,
- High costs of maintaining small class sizes and a personalized approach.
The school stated that its top priority is supporting students, parents, and staff. Plans are in place to ensure the smoothest possible conclusion to the school year, especially for graduating classes. In addition, other schools in the region have already offered assistance. For example, Malvern College is ready to accept students on the following terms:
- Enrollment in existing classes,
- Preservation of the current tuition level,
- Retention of all existing discounts and benefits.
The admissions process has also been simplified to make the transition faster and smoother.

The closure of Malvern St James is not just news — it is an event for the entire educational community. The school was founded in 1893 and for 100+ years welcomed students from around the world; in 2025 it joined Galaxy Global Education Group and even announced a transition to co-education for the first time in its history.
