How to prepare for PSAT exam for international students

The PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) or NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) is considered a simplified version of SAT, a "preliminary" academic test. The exam is conducted in high school and helps determine student readiness for SAT or ACT, pay attention to areas of knowledge in which training is not yet available.

In addition, good results on PSAT help American (and not only) schoolchildren to receive National Merit Scholarships: each year the size of the scholarship fund is more than $ 180 million - this support for students can be very useful when paying for the cost of university courses.

PSAT structure

The total duration of the exam is 2 hours and 45 minutes. The reading, writing and mathematics skills are checked:

  • Reading (or Evidence-Based Reading)

The last 60 minutes: these are 5 texts (examples of world and American literature, texts on Social studies, history and other sciences), for which 47 questions are proposed.

  • Written language (or Writing & Language)

There are 35 minutes for answers to 44 questions. Tasks are devoted to grammar, stylistic rules and knowledge of English syntax.

  • Mathematics (Math)

The block consists of two parts. The first includes 16 questions on basic algebra (gives 25 minutes, the calculator is not allowed to use). The second is knowledge on the theory of probability, statistics, mathematical analysis, algebra and geometry, it takes 45 minutes.

One of the key tips that we can give in preparing for the PSAT is mindfulness, mindfulness and once again mindfulness. So you can avoid absurd and insulting mistakes, do not get caught in the "traps" of the examiners, be sure that you have correctly understood all the details of the task.
