Having gained independence, the former Republic of the USSR Kazakhstan announced a competition for the creation of a flag for the new country. The competition was attended by artists and designers from Turkey, Germany, Mongolia and other countries, including former CIS countries. The victory was won by the Kazakh artist Shaken Niyazbekov.
- The flag of Kazakhstan is a delicate light blue color,which symbolizes freedom, well-being, reliability, honesty. This sky is flawless and pure, offering peace. Blue color since ancient times had a meaning in the Turkic culture, personifying the heavenly dome.
- The central figure on the flag is a golden disk of the sun with rays in the form of ears of wheat. The sun symbolizes vitality, wealth and prosperity, declares to the world that young Kazakhstan is open to partnership and cooperation.
- Under the sun is a soaring eagle,a familiar heraldic symbol. Berkut reports on the independence and sovereignty of the state. This shrewd predator personifies the courage and strength of the Kazakh people.
- At the pole there is a national Kazakh ornament of gold color - koshkar-muiz. The shapes and lines of the pattern are harmoniously intertwined, embodying adherence to folk traditions.
The flag was approved on June 4, 1992.
