Czech Republic in the XX century: the history of Czech flag

Everyone knows this country, only some remember what its flag looks like, but even fewer people are aware of the history of the flag, its symbolism, how during the XX century the Czech Republic changed its name, becoming part of different republics.

Today we know the Czech flag in this form: a rectangular canvas, which consists of two horizontal stripes of equal size (white on top, red on the bottom). On the side is an isosceles blue triangle. The official national flag of the Czech Republic is the flag of the once existing Czechoslovakia, introduced in 1920. Yes, the Czech Republic, or rather the Czech Republic, was not smaspe.ralways called as it is now.

How did the flag appeared?

When Czechoslovakia emerged, there was a long, heated debate about what the flag of the state would look like. Since the XII century, the coats of arms of the Kingdom of Bohemia were present in red and white, derived from the coat of arms showing a silver lion in a shield.

In 1918, the red and white flag became the Czechoslovak flag, but unofficially. Then the blue triangle was added (as the personification of Slovakia), in 1920 in this form it was officially approved.

When there was a Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia (1939-1945) and the country was occupied by the Nazis, its flag was a canvas on which three stripes were applied - white, red, blue. The first two were a symbol of Bohemia (Bohemia), and all three colors symbolized Moravia.

After Czechoslovakia was divided, the Czechs adopted a flag similar to the Czechoslovak one, which violated the constitutional act prohibiting the use of the symbols of the federal state by the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Name change

Let us recall which states included the Czech Republic?

  • In 1918 – Czechoslovakia and in the same year – czechoslovak Republic.
  • Before the beginning of the Second World War, the state was called the Czecho-Slovak Republic.
  • During the war it was, as mentioned above, the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia.
  • Then, at the end of the war, the old name returned – the Czechoslovak Republic.
  • In the 1960s, the Czech Republic was part of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic, and in 1990 the Czechoslovak Federal Republic. In the same year it became the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic.
  • And in 1993, the Czech Republic was born, which exists to this day. These are the frequent changes over the course of one century.

What is it now?

Today, the Czech Republic is a fairly developed country with a good standard of living, progressive in many ways. Judging by the current flag, it honors traditions and its history.

This state boasts a fairly long life expectancy: 78 years and the 38th line in the world ranking. No wonder there are many who want to move there: someone does business on the territory of this state, someone gets an education. Compared to France and Germany, there are quire low taxes and a good level of income. And the Czech Republic is famous for many attractions, including buildings of the Middle Ages. At least once in a lifetime it is worth visiting a country with such an interesting, rich history!
