Verbier is a village in south-western Switzerland, in the canton of Valais. It is located at around 1,500 metres in the Val de Bagnes valley south of Martigny, looking out over the Grand Combin massif. The resort is best known as a ski area in the Swiss Alps and is recognized as one of the premier off-piste destinations in the world, with the surrounding terrain rising to 3,222 metres at Bec des Rosses.
Alongside the mountain scenery, Verbier has become home to private international boarding schools that combine academic study with a setting built around outdoor sport. Verbier International School, the former Verbier campus of St. George's, opened in the Chalet Mascotte at the entrance of the village in September 2010. A newer school, Copperfield Verbier, was founded in January 2021 in the Le Hameau neighbourhood.

Entry and student visa requirements for Switzerland
Verbier is located in the Swiss canton of Valais, so an international student enrolling here follows the same national rules as anywhere in Switzerland. According to the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM), entry requirements depend on the purpose of the stay, which includes studies, and on how long you plan to remain in the country.
The duration of stay is the main dividing line:
- A short stay covers up to 90 days and falls under the general entry rules,
- Studies that last longer than 90 days count as a long-term stay and are governed by a separate set of residence provisions.
A few practical points help a family prepare before departure:
- Check the current entry conditions before travelling, as the SEM advises, since the documents required vary by nationality and purpose,
- Submit any visa application through the official online portal at swiss-visa.ch, which explains how and where to apply,
- Allow enough time ahead of the term start, because long-term study permits are processed by the cantonal migration authorities and not issued on arrival.
The SEM entry guidance was last updated on 07.08.2026. Specialists at Smapse will guide you through every stage of admission.
