BTEC stands for Business and Technology Education Council. The BTEC assessment system is a popular professional qualification in the UK and is becoming increasingly popular among international students. Each course using the BTEC is created to meet the demand of a specific industry and prepare students to embark on professional careers, mainly related to the fields of business, engineering and information and communication technology. BTECs exist in 16 sectors, from healthcare to tourism.
Some of the qualifications obtained through the BTEC are considered technical certificates: this means that the graduate of the course already has official permission from an official professional body to work in the sector associated with the course. BTEC can be taken by pupils from the age of 14, either in parallel or as a substitute for the first two years of secondary education in the UK (GCSE).
Until a few years ago, BTECs were considered below the A-levels, and this negative association still negatively affects the choice of training course for parents for their child. At the same time, BTECs are now highly valued by British universities and many foreign universities and colleges.
BTECs are ideal for students who learn better through hands-on practice rather than memorizing academic theories and principles. The BTEC course outcomes provide a practical, real-world approach to learning without compromising on any of the core theoretical disciplines. In addition, they can be taken together with GCSE and A-levels or instead of them.
